Christian Council, Ghana and Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana

Ghana was Africa's first country to declare independence from colonial rule in 1959. Since independence, the country has experienced severe economic difficulties as international markets have decreased for cocoa and gold, its chief exports.

Global Ministries’ main partner in Ghana is the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, one of Africa’s oldest self-governing churches. It was founded in the 1840's by German missionaries and has strong roots in the Evangelical and Reformed tradition. The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana has more than 600,000 members and more than 512 congregations. It is a significant church presence in the region of Ghana where it is strong, being the major church among the Ewe People.

The denomination always has had a unified spirit in its spirituality and social action ministries. One leader of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, Rev. Setri Nyoni, currently serves as the General Secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. This fact is an indication of the high regard of other reformed churches around the world for the denomination as well as for this particular leader.

Global Ministries accompanies the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana in its programs in church expansion and service. The Mawuli High School in Ho, Volta Region, was founded approximately 50 years ago by Mr. and Mrs. Trosts, missionaries sent by the United Church of Christ at that time. The high school is a very respected institution in its geographic area, providing high quality education to children in the area who may have not have had such an opportunity without the school’s presence.

Likewise, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana founded and administers several important hospitals, one of the better known ones is the Adidome Hospital. The hospitals provide a base from which community health work is carried out locally.

The denomination trains ministers through the programs of its Bible School, where students learn ways to carry out ministry in their particular local and national cultural, social, political and ecclesiastical context.

Development and educational work with women is an important element of the work of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana. Small income generation projects have been formed with women as a way for them to economically support their families. Small businesses in areas of snail farming and palm oil production are examples of these projects.

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana wishes to address the tremendous challenge of HIV/AIDS in their region, in their country, on their continent. One important step in this will be training of clergy to better equip them to work with the victims of AIDS and their families, as well as promote community-based prevention strategies.
