Christianity Bible Class Project
ZhouKou City, Henan Province, China ZhouKou City is located in the southeast of the Chinese province of Henan. The population of ZhouKou City is almost 11 million people and over 90 percent are of peasant background It is a typical agricultural city, lacking mineral resources and economically weak. Henan province has been especially hard hit by HIV/AIDS. Because the area is so economically depressed, one way people were making money to care for their families was by selling blood; and the services collecting the blood were reusing needles, thereby spreading HIV among the poor at incredible rates. In that area, the middle generation is all but gone. The generations who are left are grandparents trying to care for grandchildren. Most of the older generation never learned to read. The ZhouKou Christian Community, through their regional Christian Council, is beginning a literacy project designed to help the older residents learn to read while at the same time helping them learn about and understand Christianity. In a span of three years, classes will be held in each of the 60 churches across the city. Each class can accommodate up to 100 participants and will last four months. Classes will meet weekly for about two hours each week. Every participant will receive a large-print Bible, a notebook, and a pen. Instructors will read scripture, with focus on diction and reading, and then discuss the meaning of the scripture and answer any questions. Homework and memory verses will also be assigned. These classes will be helpful and meaningful for participants and are also seen as an enhancement to the society through raising literacy rates and greater spirituality. Grandparents will also be able to better assist grandchildren with their school work. The ZhouKou Christian Community estimates the following costs for pieces of the project:
