Asia Rural Institute, Japan

In 2006 the Asia Rural Institute, a long-standing partner of Global Ministries, graduated its 34th class from the Rural Leaders Training Program.  The 26 students in this eight-month course came from throughout Asia and Africa.  The participants received training in sustainable agriculture, appropriate technology, food processing, livestock, natural farming, environment and development, micro credit, community organizing, conflict resolution and other leadership, development and agricultural topics.  The Rural Leaders Training Program includes practical training in leadership skills as well as opportunities to learn by doing in the fields of development and agriculture.  Through the daily activity of producing healthy and safe food by organic agricultural methods together with participants from a variety of countries, the participants were able to understand the importance of agriculture and labor.  They learned that important qualities of a rural leader include dedication to the people and community, determination to realize their dreams, a strong conviction to overcome difficulties and obstacles, and responsibility toward the next generation.

The graduates of the Rural Leaders Training Program return to their home communities to help lead local agricultural communities in transforming local practices toward sustainable agriculture which makes the best use of the local human and natural resources.  These graduates help to create a bright vision for the future in their home communities.
