it is an independent institution, that offers integral accompaniment to every person who has suffered or suffers violation of their fundamental rights. Since its foundation in 2004, ALAS has supported the liberation of 72 men and women, out of a total of 105 political prisoners. Since 2007, ALAS has had a scholarship program for the detainees at the maximum security prisons of Chorrillos and Miguel Castro Castro. Two groups of fifteen prisoners are studying professional college careers that will allow them to reintegrate themselves into society and to serve their communities.
ALAS is also providing counseling to the prisoners and their families. The Last Refuge Restaurant, a business that is run by ex-prisoners, was visited by Rev. Cally Rogers and Rev. David Vargas in 2006, as well as Susan Sanders (OGHS) and Rev. Amy Gopp (WOC) in 2008. This restaurant is just one of several micro-enterprises supported by ALAS, such as two clothing stores, an internet café, a carpenter workshop, a micro-taxi company, photocopier services, and a small market.
