Risitas Nursery school located in the suburb of Buenos Aires, is a social service mission of the a local Disciples of Christ Church in Saavedra, Argentina. A Global Ministries missionary from the United States, Hallie Lemon who was known for her exceptional work in early childhood education throughout Latin America worked to establish the school in 1944.
"Risitas" Nursery school maintains an important service to sixty children in the neighborhood of Saavedra. "Risitas," which means "Laughter," provides an opportunity for growth and fun for children between the ages of 45 days and five years old. The majority of the children come from families in which both parents work or come from families with a single working parent. Many of the families cannot afford to pay the tuition, so scholarships are very important and provided in the majority of the cases. Risitas also has several differently-abled children who face physical or psychological problems.
Risitas is not a day-care center in the normal sense of the word. Apart from serving healthy meals and providing nurturing care. Risitas is an educational program. The classes are small, so that the children receive individual attention from the teachers. In Risitas the children learn by having fun. The fun includes, singing, artwork, playing on the patio and in the sandbox, and learning about nature. For example, the four-year-old class plant vegetables in the garden while the two-year olds plant flowers. Learning to care for the environment is seems to be quite a pleasure for city kids. For More Information General Contact Special Projects Resource Development , 317-713-2555 gifts@dom.disciples.org
