Council of Evangelical Churches of Colombia
CEDECOL, the Council of Evangelical Churches of Colombia, is a partner of Global Ministries, which supports it in its efforts to offer relief and hope to the victims of Colombia's situation of violence and upheaval. Global Ministries welcomes special offerings for the following programs of CEDECOL in Colombia:
1. CEDECOL Red De Mujeres (Women's Network) This network of women work throughout Colombia as advocates for human rights issues. They work with women and their families who have been displaced because of the civil war in Colombia and with women's groups in poor communities. One of the Network's activities is offering workshops and activities to help build self-esteem in women. They also work with women's church groups to help promote leadership in women's ministries.
2. CEDECOL'S Human Rights Commission. This group centers its efforts in the education of grassroots human rights leaders that work with peace and justice issues. The Commission facilitates programs that help communities become self-sufficient through the establishment of small businesses and income-generation projects. The Commission promotes open dialogue for peace between churches, government, and armed groups in Colombia.
3. ASVIDAS - Association for a Dignified Life. This group works in the poorest and most desolate areas of Bogota. They hold Bible studies, empowerment workshops, and teach different arts and crafts that can be sold to help support a family. The Association also teaches skills such as carpentry that will qualify and empower a person to get a job.
4. Demobilization Project. This project helps to reinsert and help people who have been involved in armed movements back into the mainstream community. In Colombia many young people are taken from their families and forced to join one armed group or another. It is very difficult then for these young people then to leave the armed groups and reenter the mainstream of society. Many of the young people have opted to flee these groups and need a sort of a "half-way" house to get readjusted to society. This project provides safe houses and care for these young people who want to turn their lives around.
