GM Staff Lead Two People-to-People Pilgrimages
Felix Ortiz, Area Executive for Latin America and the Caribbean, and LaMarco Cable, Program Associate for Education and Advocacy, will lead a group of African-American Disciples (along with three GM board members – two Disciples and one UCC!) on a pilgrimage to Haiti May 27 to June 1, 2009. The trip is funded in part by a grant from the Black Leadership Projects Grants in Disciples Home Missions (DHM). The group will meet with our partners, CONASPEH, and focus particularly on gathering facts to be better advocates for Haiti. The trip participants are: Armon Allon, Viann Bristow, Jeremy Brown-Gellet, Daisie Chambers, Elie Floradin, Nedella Foster, Irvin Green, Patsy Harris, Courtney Stanton, and Candis Wilson. The second trip will be lead by Xiaoling Zhu, Area Executive for East Asia and the Pacific, and Julia Brown Karimu, Mission Personnel Executive and DOM Vice President, to China on May 29 to June 9. The trip participants are Disciples Seminarians who will be exploring how the global component of mission can be a vital part of their future ministries. The participants include: Rebekah Cypert, Donna Campbell, Ryan Motter, Tara Lyn Thompson, and Jonathan Wallace. Please keep these two groups in your prayers.

Remember World Refugee Day on June 20
The Refugee & Immigration Ministries programs of both the UCC and the Disciples encourage congregations to recognize World Refugee Day on or around June 20. Church World Service provides a worship resource appropriate for use as a bulletin insert. "Real People, Real Needs" is the theme provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Even in the midst of an economic recession it is important to share what we have with others. The scripture selected considers the example of the widow in Zarephath (I Kings 17) and how she shared her food with Elijah during a famine and how God rewarded her for her faithfulness.
