Reverend Mike Solberg, Senior Pastor of Second Congregational United Church of Christ in Rockford, Illinois is off to England to swim the English Channel to raise money to build a school of the Evangelical Congregational Church in Angola (IECA), a Global Ministries partner church which has a covenantal relationship with the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ. Depending on conditions in the channel, Mike's swim could begin as early as September 10. WCC Central Committee Makes Several Important Statements
Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland from August 26 to September 2, the WCC Central Committee released the following statements:

Community of Disciples of Christ in Congo Appoint First Female District Minister
The Reverend Likafo Ifonge Marie Louise was appointed to serve as the Supervising Minister of the Kinshasa District during the 22th General Assembly of the Community of Disciples of Christ in Congo (DRC) held in Mbandaka this August, 2009.  Likafo is the first woman in the Disciples' church to serve in this capacity, and probably the first woman to hold this position among the approximately 70 member churches of the ecumenical body of the Church of Christ in Congo. A Call to Pray and Act for Peace on September 21, 2009
In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution marking September 21 of each year as the International Day of Peace: http://www.un.org/en/events/peaceday/2009/ The intention of the resolution is to have the entire world observe a day of peace and nonviolence. To celebrate the day the World Council of Churches calls on people of faith worldwide to pray for peace on September 21 2009 or the closest Sunday. The International Day of Prayer for Peace http://overcomingviolence.org/en/about-dov/international-day-of-prayer-for-peace.html offers an opportunity for church communities in all places to pray and act together to nurture lasting peace in the hearts of people, their families, communities and societies. This year Odyssey Networks, a communications partner of the UCC and Disciples, is encouraging a million people to pledge that they will join together to pray for peace for one minute on September 21.  Go to "A Million Minutes for Peace" to see a video about the campaign and to sign the pledge, and take time out on September 21 to pray and act for peace. http://www.odysseynetworks.org/Causes/PeaceHome/OdysseyPSA/tabid/191/Default.aspx
