65 UCC and Disciples Participate in Mission Interpreters (MMI) Training in Cleveland
This past week-end 65 Disciples and UCC members gathered in Cleveland to grow in their understanding of how we do mission together through Global Ministries and learn how to tell the story back in their congregations, regions and conferences. The group included former missionaries, global mission interns, volunteers, people-to-people participants and associates who were able to share what they learned from their overseas experience. During the course of the week-end participants prepared an action plan for their particular context. The training closed with an inspiring commissioning service where Veronica Kyle, GM missionary to South Africa, challenged us all to go back home and tell the story and each MMI received a colorful stole and Global Ministries pin as a sign of their commitment to help UCC and Disciples constituents engage in global mission with the help of Global Ministries. The next national training will take place in Cleveland October 9-12, 2008 in conjunction with the MissionWorks event. Several region/conference trainings are being planned for 2008. You may contact Jan Aerie aeriej@ucc.org or Bob Shebeck bshebeck@dom.disciples.org to learn more and indicate your interest in the MMI training.

Sharon Watkins Meets with GM Partners in the Middle East this Week
Sharon writes: "October 27 - 29, 2007, I will be attending the Permanent Committee on Consensus and Collaboration for the World Council of Churches in Damascus, Syria.  The Permanent Committee provides a forum for the Protestant and Orthodox members of the World Council of Churches to further explore their relationship.  We will be hosted by His Beatitude, Ignatius IV, of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East. Prior to this meeting I am traveling to Israel/Palestine and Lebanon.  Dr. Peter Makari, Area Executive for the Middle East/Europe for Global Ministries has arranged a week of visits, conversations and witness with our mission partners for me and Rick.  This is my first trip to the Middle East and I am really quite excited. As we meet with our ecumenical partners, please pray that we approach our conversations with a listening ear to what is being offered to us as witness of God's presence in this region.  Please pray for our understanding of the needs expressed, the hopes wished.  Please pray that we may join with our brothers and sisters in the unity that comes from our shared passion for peace with justice. Please pray that we may be true and faithful witnesses for wholeness in this fragmented part of the world.

Global Mission Intern, Alex Morse, Shares About his Work in the Dominican Republic
Alex Morse is serving with Caminante in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.  He works with children in Caminante's Outreach Ministry.  His work is possible because of funds provided by Week of Compassion of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). In his latest letter, he shares the following: "Mainly I've been doing two things; house visits to people living with HIV/AIDS and teaching English classes.  I am now teaching 5 classes with the largest being about 60 students, and is located in an old bar/supermarket.  All together I have about 90 students in my first batch and we will be finishing up the first level here in a week..."
