Prayers and Support expressed by Global Ministries for the people of Myanmar (Burma)
Our prayers of support and concern are with the people of Myanmar, the country once known as Burma. The hopes and democratic aspirations of thousands, inspired bravely into peaceful witness by Buddhist religious leaders, once again swell against the cruelty and repression of their government. Their mounting demonstrations this week beckon a change in political leadership, the end of abduction and torture of dissident and minority voices, and the release of political prisoners such as Nobel-prize winning opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, confined to home arrest for nearly seventeen years. Yet the world watches as the military government meets the prayers and protests of their people with bullets, batons and scores of arrests. More violent reprisals are sure to come. World Communion Sunday Resources Posted on the Global Ministries Website
Is your congregation doing anything special for World Communion Sunday on October 7? World Communion Sunday offers congregations a distinctive opportunity to gather around the Communion Table with the global community of faith in our hearts. The first Sunday of October has become a time when Christians in every culture break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm Christ as the Head of the Church. On that day, they remember that they are part of the whole body of believers. Whether shared in a grand cathedral, a mud hut, outside on a hilltop, in a meetinghouse, or in a storefront, Christians celebrate the communion liturgy in as many ways as there are congregations. World Communion Sunday can be both a profound worship experience and a time for learning more about our wider community of faith.
