Church of North India: Marching for Land Reform in India

November 8, 2007

The Church of North India (CNI) - through its synodical and diocesan Boards of Social Services has collaborated with several other non-governmental organizations in organizing and sponsoring "Janedesh 2007" - a 26-day march of 25,000 landless persons from 15 states to Delhi to demand the formulation of a national land policy and a speedy and just resolution of land disputes.

At the October event in Delhi the congregation of the CNI- Free Church also joined the Janadesh marchers to show their solidarity with the poor and marginalized.  The Synodical Board of Social Services is the development and advocacy wing of the Church of North India and is dedicated to working with the marginalized in their struggles for human rights, equal access to justice, equal access to resources and access to education and vocational training.  The government accepted the demands of the marchers pertaining to land reform and announced that the Prime Minister's council will supervise the implementation of a new land reforms policy and that unfinished work on land reforms and land disputes will be actively pursued.

If you would like to support the work of the Synodical Board of Social Services (SBSS), Global Ministries is currently seeking support for the SBSS's Water for All Project.  To read about this project click  here.
