November 9, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany.

The heavily-guarded Wall separated east and west Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Twenty years on, information stands and a few remaining sections, left as an art project, are all that remain.

On October 18, 1989, East German leader Erich Honecker resigned. A large demonstration was held on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz on November 4, 1989, and the entire GDR government resigned on November 7.  Two days later, the Wall came down. The Brandenburg Gate was opened on December 22, 1989, and East and West Germany were reunited on October 3, 1990.
