Lady Doak College
- Is an autonomous, progressive women's college in India with an international outlook
- Provides a high quality, holistic education
- Enrolls 3000 students (of whom 1700 receive aid) from cities and villages across South India and beyond
- Has 140 committed Faculty, many with PhDs and international connections
- Offers the BA, BS, MA, and MS Degrees
- Offers 18 Undergraduate majors in science (zoology, botany, chemistry, mathematics, physics, bio-technology, computer applications, information technology), humanities (English, Tamil, history, economics, social sciences), and commerce and business administration
- Offers 13 Post-graduate degrees
- Has for over 50 years educated thousands of Indian women to serve and lead their community and nation in countless ways
Purpose: "to impart a liberal Christian education to students of all creeds . . . to develop their intellectual powers, locate, identify, and cultivate their interests and talents, and train them to be responsible and useful citizens."
History
- Founded in 1948 by Miss Katie Wilcox, an American educational missionary
- Major Donors: Sir James Doak, a Scottish businessman in Madurai, and Lady Helen Doak, a former teacher in the American Madura Mission
- Principals include Dr. Margaret Clapp, Pulitzer Prize winner and former President of Wellesley College
- Has grown from three thatched sheds to a lovely campus with more than 20 buildings
- Achieved Autonomy in 1978
- Awarded the highest Five Star Status by the Indian National Accreditation Council
- Introduced the Credit System in 2001
A recent graduate, says: "I am proud to be a Lady Doakian. I was well prepared for my job of teaching in the Secondary Level and for working on my MPhil at Madurai Kamaraj University. Lady Doak gave me a broad exposure to intercollegiate programs and competition, service to others, women's studies, and sports. LDC empowers women."
The Lady Doak College Endowment Fund
Funds are especially needed--now that the government is reducing funding for higher education--to endow Scholarships, Faculty Positions, a Development and Alumnae Office, Departmental Library Acquisitions, and Laboratory and Computer Equipment.
