Maharashtra, India
In India, over forty percent of the population is too poor to afford adequate nourishment on a regular basis. Attempts to transform India's economy into one that can fit into a global market economy, especially austerity measures required by international lenders, cause poorer people in the society to suffer, rather than benefit, from the changes.
There are on average 51 physicians for every 100,000 people in India. The U.N. considers India to have a moderate prevalence of HIV infection. The average life expectancy at birth is 63.9 years. Sixty-seven infants die before the age of one for every 1,000 live births and ninety-three die before the age of five for every 1,000 live births.
Global Ministries is working hard with our partners in India to revive an almost closed hospital in Maharashtra, India. This renewal process is a gradual one, involving the maintenance of the building, the replacement of old equipment and the purchase of new equipment, providing the furnishings for the nursing school, and staffing the hospital.
Listed below are several examples of the projects that still need support and attention:
Building maintenance:
- Repair of leaking roof over the Out Patient Department, pharmacy, and offices
- Private patient rooms need new roofing and paint
- False roofing and air conditioner are needed in the Occupational Therapy Department
- Walls and doors need repair in the Occupational Therapy Department
- New roof in the nursing school
Equipment:
- A computerized Hematocrit machine for hematology work
- An exercise bicycle and hand rotator for the traction unit in physiotherapy
- Ventilator, cardiac monitors and pulse oxcimeter and piping for the Intensive Care Unit
- Furniture for the nursing school hostel
Staffing:
- Trained hematologist to run the lab.
- Training for the current physiotherapist.
- Reinforcement of low-paid staff
