Pray for Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, March 13, 2016

congo_linda_james_2016_02.jpegLectionary Selection: John 12:1-8

Prayers for Democratic Republic of the Congo:

Our Creator,

During this Lenten season, we reflect upon our spiritual growth and all that God is doing in the world. As your vision for Congo unfolds, we thank you for your continuous guidance as we work in this country, rich in both human and natural resources. Just as Mary anointed the feet of Jcongo_linda_james_2016_01.jpegesus, may we - your servants - bless the Lord through humble service, offering our most precious resource for his glory, to make a difference in a world with staggering poverty (John 12:1-8).

May justice and peace rein as Congo enters a new phase of its growth. Bless the Disciples and UCC partnership with the Congo Protestant University as it works to build a nation through education. The students of the Congo Protestant University are the future of an impoverished society in desperate need of well-trained, ethical leadership. Lord, our commitment must remain strong not only because the university is blessed to have a foundation upon which to build, but because the nation requires more of the university today than it ever has.

We ask for your blessing as we continue to do your work.

Amen.

Pray for Nicaragua on Sunday, March 6, 2016

nicaragua_salley_01.jpegLectionary Selection: Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32

Prayers for Nicaragua:

Oh Lord our God how excellent is thy name in all the earth! You have given us all that we need to live fruitful lives for you. You love us unconditionally. You gave us the free-will to make choices even though we don’t always choose Your way. Nevertheless, You make a “way out of no way” for us when we feel defeated from some of the choices we make and from some of the choices that are made for us by unjust systems and powers.

Even though we feel weak and defeated, we pray for a renewed spirit and we pray for a renewed spirit for our government leaders making decisions that effect our lives. We pray for this renewed spirit to invade the mind, body and soul of our government leaders. We pray for a renewed spirit that will give us the strength, the hope and the energy to get up and use the life you have given us to transform our weakness into strength and our hopelessness into hope. Help us Lord we pray that all will be “brought to our senses” [paraphrased from Luke 15:17, The Message] and hear your voice, embrace your words and follow your guidance of love and justice.  Amen.

Pray for Chile on Sunday, February 28, 2016

DSC00117.jpegLectionary Selection: Luke 13:1-9

Prayers for Chile:
God, You hear the prayers of our Chilean brothers and sisters as they lift their voices from the foothills of the Andes Mountains.  We petition you today with their requests: for peace to surround both the political relationships of the Mapuche conflict and the protests occurring in Valparaiso.  We pray for people of the church, that the young people of Chile will fall in love again with God, for strength within pastoral DSC00455.jpegfamilies and that the Shalom Center will continue to be a place of healing for many years to come.  As a new school year begins, we pray for teachers who work with vulnerable children, that they may not only offer academics, but also refuge and hope.  We lift up those working to heal their emotional traumas, those who have dared to share their stories and those who still remain silent.  We pray for strength and perseverance as the Chilean people find their way through these challenges, being moved by Your guidance and perfect peace.  Amen.

Pray for India on Sunday, February 14, 2016

lyvers_India1.jpegLectionary Selection: Luke 4:1-13

Prayers for India:

Dear God,
Thank you for the blessing of the beautiful land and culture of India. You are truly present here in the landscapes and environment and certainly in the hearts of so many people.

We pray that you are with those here who continually face difficulty in the form of oppression and rejection. Those who feel that, due to their caste or gender, their birth is a mistake. We know, dear Lord, that you do not make mistakes. Let them always feel accepted and loved unconditionally through you.

Continue to lift up those fighting for change. Those who are standing up for acceptance and justice. Keep them safe from harm as they attempt to fight a tradition of oppression. May their efforts break through and may progress be made.

Bless this country and the people in it. In your son’s name we pray.

Amen

Pray for Israel/Palestine on Sunday, February 7, 2016

Lebanon-Jordan-IsraelPalestine_SepOct2015_058.JPGLectionary Selection: Luke 9:38-36, (37-43a)

Prayers for Israel/Palestine:

Dear God:

Today, we ask for nothing less than to be astounded at your greatness!

The streets of our cities are raging with confrontations between angry, frustrated youth and hostile soldiers of the occupation who are ordered to shoot on sight. The nightly news graphically horrifies us with stories of how our whole region, indeed our whole world, is seized by forces of evil that maul, convulse and scarcely leave it. Neither the world powers nor your faithful disciples seem able to cast out the demons of conflict, discord and violence.

We have witnessed the glory of your beloved Son, your chosen, at Epiphany and in the Transfiguration; we have heard your command to ‘listen to Him’; but, nay, He was found alone.

Dear Lord, you are still speaking! So speak to us, open our ears and hearts so we may listen. Speak peace to the humanity you love. Rebuke the unclean spirits of fear, frustration, anger, pride, hatred, enmity and vengeance.

O God: Heal your world. Astound us with your greatness.

Amen.

Guatemala_Bob_Shebeck.JPGLectionary Selection: Luke 4:21-30

Prayers for Guatemala:

Nim laj qajaw (Great Lord),

We give thanks and are indebted to you for the multiple blessings received during 2015. We are aware of our many needs, and know that with your divine grace we have found the ways to resolve our struggles with hope. Humbly, we give thanks to you Great Lord from deep inside our hearts especially for the courage you gave the people of Guatemala to come together in prayer, protests, demonstrations, and outcries filled with tears in order to demand that their government and public service officials be accountable for numerous acts of corruption which deprived many Guatemalans from having access to basic social services like medical care and education.

Pray for Lesotho on Sunday, January 10, 2016

Lesotho_Behle_05.jpegLectionary Selection: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

Prayers for Lesotho:
Heavenly Creator, in this Epiphany season, let us remember the absolute newness of the coming of your Son Jesus, a renewal of the people, a baptism by the Holy Spirit. Help us to be the wheat of this world, rather than the chaff or husks. You declared your approval and pleasure in Jesus Christ, and we wish to live our lives in a manner which prompts the same affirmation for us. In our time on Earth, we can prepare the way for Jesus to come again, with your guidance and love.

God, we pray for the leaders of Lesotho, the politicians and military in a fight which hurts the innocents; please guide their decisions with your wisdom and grace and help them find agreement, on a path without violence. We also pray for those whose lives have been affected by the ongoing struggle with HIV/AIDS, asking that you give them your comfort.
