Pray for the Dominican Republic on Sunday, May 15, 2016

IMG_7644.jpegLectionary Selection: John 14:8-17 (25-27)

Prayers for the Dominican Republic
O eternal God, we come to you today full of hope and excitement for the journey ahead. The path before us today was laid out by your son Jesus Christ, who so vividly showed us how to speak and serve. Lord we know the challenges facing the people of the Dominican Republic are hard, but that we are surrounded with support from brothers and sisters around the world. Lord, we believe in your works with all our heart and strive to reflect them here in Boca Chica. We ask you Lord to please keep close those struggling with troubled hearts and that you guide them to nourishing communities.

Pray for Chile on Sunday, May 8, 2016

IMG_0561.jpgLectionary Selection: John 17:20-26

Prayers for Chile:

Loving God and Creator,

Thank you for saving me a seat at your table.

Those moments I sat crying because I didn’t believe I was worthy — you reminded me I am.
The days when I felt useless against the injustices of the world — Fotos_C4K_Eben_Ezer_18.12.10_055.jpgyou encouraged me to keep trying.
The nights I went to bed lonely and dejected — you called me to communion.
You welcomed me to your table and into your heart.

When I got here, I discovered that while I was unique, I wasn’t alone.
I sat in my seat and felt the spirit of community running through me, like a river.
I looked around at my brothers and sisters and I knew I belonged. Here, with them, at your table.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Perhaps it takes a table to raise humanity?
One table, made up of many. All of us; all people. God’s people, together.

Thank you for saving each of us a seat at your table.

Pray for India on Sunday, May 1, 2016

india_anil_henry_02.jpegLectionary Selection: John 14:23-29 or John 5:1-9

Prayers for India:

Dear God,

We in Mungeli thank you for giving us the opportunity to be able to serve you in such a special way.

We know that there are millions of people around the world who suffer due to not being able to get the education and care to be able to break free from the bonds of poverty. They are all around the pool waiting to be enabled but each time the water gets stirred, it is only those who are rich and powerful who are able to reach first.

Mungeli is privileged to be able to provide low-cost English medium education to over 700 village children, many who are from the lower caste, with parents who are neither literate nor educated.

india_rambo_school_anil_henry.jpegThese people were frogs that now have a chance to be able to jump out of the pool, be healed, and be able to reach the dreams and aspirations which we all take for granted.

It is in this special way that we make a difference; through visits from Global Ministries friends and volunteers who come to share their lives and knowledge with these young children.

Thank you God for helping us in this very special ministry.

Pray for Chile on Sunday, April 24, 2016

Chile_Elena_Huegel_04.jpegLectionary Selection: John 13:31-35

Prayers for Chile:

A new commandment: Love the local hospital and healthcare personnel who are stretched beyond their energy and resources by so many needs and demands.

A new commandment: Love the police, the carabineros, trusted by some, feared and despised by others as they struggle to clean up a history of abuse.

Chile_Elena_Huegel_01.jpegA new commandment: Love the politicians, left and right wing, who have been wallowing this year in a swamp of corruption and scandal.

A new commandment: Love the truck drivers who threaten to strike bringing the country to a standstill; no food in the supermarkets, no gas at the filling stations.

A new commandment: Love the school teachers  and administrators with overflowing classrooms and Chile_Elena_Huegel_02.jpegstandardized testing consuming their energy and attention.

A new commandment: Love the news media feasting on all the bad news.

How difficult it is, oh Lord, to love our enemies while longing for dignity, truth and justice. May everyone in Chile know that we are your disciples first because of the way we love those who know you, and then, because of the love we have for those who don't. May the new gossip be "Those Christians sure do know how to love!"

Pray for Indonesia on Sunday, April 17, 2016

Pray for recently elected Synod Moderator of the Church in West Timor (GMIT) and member of CGMB, Rev. Dr. Mery Kolimon (second from left) and the recently re-elected Dean of the Theology Faculty of Artha Wacana Christian University, Rev. Evie Maria Ratu-Pada (fourth from left).

Lectionary Selection: John 10:22-30

Prayers for Indonesia:
O Great Shepherd, unite us in prayer with the churches of Indonesia as they seek to discern and bear witness to your Word of hope and salvation. Be with our brothers and sisters gathered today in worship across the islands—in the militarized regions of Papua, next to chemically-saturated rice paddies in Java, longing to be heard amidst the cosmopolitan confusion of Jakarta, struggling to survive on the parched plains of south Timor, resting from their labor on palm oil plantations in Kalimantan. Grant these your sheep, guidance for their journeys, protection from exploitation, and comfort in the face of loss and despair. We pray for the Church of West Timor. May its new leadership encourage repentance, heal wounded relationships, reform broken systems, instill hope and be strengthened by your grace. We pray for the Christian University in West Timor. Bless its teachers and students that they may grow together through research, study, reflection, and community service. Help especially the Theology Faculty and its Truth and Reconciliation Team as it seeks to break a long tradition of campus violence. O God, make your presence known in all these places that your sheep may be saved.  Amen.

Pray for the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, April 10, 2016

Rev_Marco_with_CDCC_Women.jpegLectionary Selection: John 21:1-19

Prayers for the Democratic Republic of the Congo:
Gracious Creator, we marvel at how you feed the little birds. You created our world of abundance to sustain all life. Like Peter, we too are in need of forgiveness for the times when we act according to our own will. Yet, you forgave Peter and called him to feed your sheep. Thank you for calling us to feed your sheep both spiritually and physically, a “wholistic” ministry to bring the whole Gospel to the whole person. Like the disciples we need to listen and adhere to your voice. In doing so, may we too enjoy the rich fellowship and communion of your presence.

Pray for Paraguay on Sunday, April 3, 2016

paraguay_2016_amelia_casillas_01.jpegLectionary Selection: John 20:19-31

Prayers for Paraguay:
Thank you, God, for greeting us every day with the blessing of peace and hope that come with the risen savior.

We also give thanks for "Mision de Amistad" which is an arm of the Disciples of Christ Church in Paraguay, which founded the "Betty and Raymond Mills" Higher Technical Institute of Nursing career in 1966.

paraguay_2016_amelia_casillas_02.jpegToday we ask that open doors and hope be with young Paraguayan nursing students, even when their economic situation limits them. The institute currently has 45 active students. Some students can not continue their studies because of low-income and lack of job stability. Many of them have suffered from the Paraguay River floods and have had to leave their homes and studios. We pray that we can develop a project of scholarships for these students who strive to achieve their goals so they can support themselves and their families. In the name of the Risen Christ we pray, Amen.

Pray for India on Sunday, March 27, 2016

india_nancy_lott_henry_2016_05.jpgLectionary Selection: John 20:1-18 or Luke 24:1-12

Prayers for India:
Dear Lord, today let us pray for the nursing students of the Christian Hospital Mungeli. Praying that their hearts and minds continue to be dedicated and inspired by you and your people. Help them be as the women who went to the tomb of Jesus Christ after his passing, who were shocked and dismayed to not see Jesus in his place. These women still had the courage to inform the disciples and the others that Jesus was gone. They did not fear having people think they were nonsensical or fear being reprimanded. They shared what they had found and what they knew to be true. Lord we pray today that our students continue to be courageous and excellent examples for all women in Chattisgargh, who are often discouraged from being educated and courageous members of their communities. We pray their faith and knowledge will grow and that you will fill them with your spirit as they progress and mature into wonderful servants of your people.

Pray for Israel/Palestine on Sunday, March 20, 2016

Lectionary Selection: Luke 19:28-40

Prayers for Israel/Palestine:

Blessed is the one who wept over Jerusalem
for not knowing the ways of peace.
Blessed is the one who yearned to gather us
under her wing like a Mother hen.
Blessed is the one who rode a donkey
through the shouts of joy and hope,
palms waving and stones crying out.
Blessed is the Messiah who entered
the dangerous streets of Jerusalem.

Hosanna, we fling wide the gates of our hearts to you.
We confess that we were looking for a more virile Messiah
not a donkey rider, a mother hen.
We confess that we still do not know how to accept you.
We confess we prefer the shouting of Palm Sunday,
over the darkness of Maundy Thursday,
the tears of Good Friday,
the deathly quiet of Holy Saturday.

Hosanna, teach us the things that make for peace
with justice, freedom and dignity.
Help us to recognize you
in all your humble glory
and in each other.

Pray for Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, March 13, 2016

congo_linda_james_2016_02.jpegLectionary Selection: John 12:1-8

Prayers for Democratic Republic of the Congo:

Our Creator,

During this Lenten season, we reflect upon our spiritual growth and all that God is doing in the world. As your vision for Congo unfolds, we thank you for your continuous guidance as we work in this country, rich in both human and natural resources. Just as Mary anointed the feet of Jcongo_linda_james_2016_01.jpegesus, may we - your servants - bless the Lord through humble service, offering our most precious resource for his glory, to make a difference in a world with staggering poverty (John 12:1-8).

May justice and peace rein as Congo enters a new phase of its growth. Bless the Disciples and UCC partnership with the Congo Protestant University as it works to build a nation through education. The students of the Congo Protestant University are the future of an impoverished society in desperate need of well-trained, ethical leadership. Lord, our commitment must remain strong not only because the university is blessed to have a foundation upon which to build, but because the nation requires more of the university today than it ever has.

We ask for your blessing as we continue to do your work.
