Take Action on the Conflict Coltan and Cassiterite Act of 2008
Senators Sam Brownback and Richard Durbin have sponsored and submitted the "Hope for Africa's Forgotten: A Report on the Fact-Finding Mission to Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Kenya" report and the "Conflict Coltan and Cassiterite Act of 2008" bill to the Senate for consideration.  The situation in the Congo has been a preoccupation of Global Ministries and our Congolese global partners and Global Ministries encourages you to raise the issue of the humanitarian crisis in the Congo to your senator.  To learn more about the conflict in the Congo and for information on contacting your senator, visit:  To read the letter of appreciation that Global Ministries sent to Senators Brownback and Durbin, visit:

WCC Urges Seoul not to put Pre-conditions to North Korea
The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia has urged South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to "take urgent measures to strengthen inter-Korean relationships without any pre-conditions".   In a July 1 letter to Lee, Kobia referred to the "new South Korean government's policy towards North Korea" as a source of "concern and disappointment as it negates the spirit of the joint declarations made by the two Koreas in the recent past". The new policy, says Kobia, could be "potentially hindering the efforts for peace and reunification on the Korean peninsula". Asia Christian Conference Reclaim Rights of Children Living with HIV/AIDS
Challenged by the 2007 interfaith activity organized by the Asian Interfaith Network (AINA) to "Keep the Promise" in responding to HIV and AIDS, AINA is now grappling with the increasing incidence of HIV and AIDS in children and the projected increase in the number of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).  AINA leaders and other members from Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) representing ten countries of Asia (Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, and Korea), met in Chiang Mai, Thailand from July 2-5, 2008.  The theme of the conference was "Reclaiming Rights of Children Affected and Living with HIV and AIDS."  To read more about their efforts to restore human dignity and to reclaim the rights of children affected and living with HIV and AIDS, visit:

Contact Your Senator about the Jubilee Act
On June 24, 2008, the Jubilee Act for Responsible Lending and Expanded Debt Cancellation (HR 2634/ S 2166) passed the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Revisions to the bill lead to the inclusion of the same Haiti Amendment that was included in the U.S. House of Representatives, which calls for the Secretary of the Treasury to work for immediate debt cancellation for Haiti. The revised bill also includes stronger language on vulture funds, and a Sense of the Congress that the U.S. should fully fund its prior commitments to the international financial institutions (IFIs).  The bill must now be considered and passed by the full Senate before it can go to the President and be signed into law.  For instructions on contacting your senator, visit:

GM Missionaries to Botswana, Jim and Jayanthi Wilson, Share an Update
The Wilsons recently visited the Kgodisong Centre which was founded in 2001 by a local congregation of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) in the village of Kanye.  Concerned by an escalating number of orphans in the community as a result of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, a preschool/daycare for orphans and vulnerable children aged 2 to 6 years was established.  To read about the Wilson's visit to Kgodisong Centre, visit:
