Day of Prayer and Action for Zimbabwe on Sunday, June 22, 2008
The citizens of Zimbabwe will return to the polls to cast their ballots for the presidency on Friday, 27 June 2008.  Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ want to emphasize the critical nature of this election, its fairness and its aftermath as the results will influence the future of the nation and region.  As the days lead up to the Election Day we are mindful of the challenges of our global partners and all the people of Zimbabwe as they seek to overcome violence as they exercise democracy.  On Sunday 22 June 2008 Global Ministries in solidarity with our partners, the world community invites you to join us in a season of prayer for the people of Zimbabwe, its leaders and election officials.  On this Sunday and the days to follow we ask you to join the faith community praying for  a swift, peaceful and just resolution to the crisis confronting our sisters and brothers in Zimbabwe and praying God's peace, justice and grace to prevail in that region. To download a prayer and sign a petition, click here: Zimbabwe

Movie "Nanking" Shares Story of Courageous Disciples Missionaries and Others
Looking for a youth group/camp activity or a summer movie night possibility for your congregation? The movie "Nanking" is "a powerful reminder of the heartbreaking cost of war and testament to the courage and conviction of those few determined to stand up against its horrors. Known as "the rape of Nanking" the Japanese army in 1937 invaded China's capital city, unleashing a horrific onslaught of murder and rape. Incredibly, a small group of Westerners who stayed behind saved thousands. The film touchingly captures this controversial, fast-fading chapter in history through interviews with Chinese survivors, archival footage and compelling readings of the Westerners' letters and diaries…" You can pick up a copy where DVDs are sold.

GM Signs a Letter Addressed to US Representative at the UN Concerning Darfur
"As president of the United Nations Security Council this month, you have the opportunity to build a unified international response to the continued violence in Darfur. We urge you to promote Council action to hold the government of Sudan accountable for ongoing attacks against civilians, violations of international commitments and continued obstruction of the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission (UNAMID). In addition, we urge you to use your leadership of the Council to help ensure that UNAMID is fully equipped and that troop-contributing countries receive the support they require. Within 2008 alone, violence has displaced more than 100,000 civilians in Darfur. Janjaweed attacks and bombings by Sudanese armed forces demonstrate that the campaign against Darfur's civilians is far from over…." To read the rest of the letter, click here: Darfur Letter

Signed Petitions on Debt Cancellation for Haiti Delivered to US Treasury Secretary
"Jubilee USA Network delivered a petition signed by nearly 3,000 Americans to the US Treasury Department urging US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to support immediate debt cancellation for Haiti when he meets with other G-8 Finance Ministers later this week – from June 13-14 -- in Osaka, Japan. "As Treasury Secretary Paulson joins other G-8 leaders in Japan this week, we call on him to support immediate debt cancellation for Haiti," said Neil Watkins, National Coordinator. "Thousands of Americans have spoken out and said that it is unacceptable for Haiti to continue to pay $1 million in illegitimate debt payments each week to the World Bank and other institutions while the people of Haiti suffer." Haiti is facing a crisis: The price of staples like rice, beans, flour, and corn have almost doubled in the past six months, and Haiti has seen riots and even killings over food…" To read the rest of the report, click here: Haiti Debt Relief
