Church Leaders Explore Ways to Slow Christian Exodus from the Middle East
The Rome gathering organized by the Sant'Egidio Community brought together Christian and Muslim scholars and religious leaders from the Middle East to discuss the value and contribution of the Eastern Christian churches in Arab nations. One element that emerged from the meeting is that Christians don't belong in the Middle East simply because they've been there since the time of Jesus and are legitimate citizens of Arab nations. Many said they must stay because they possess a unique culture and mindset that help contribute to the building of a more peaceful, democratic nation. Encourage your Congregation to Participate in the Congo Sabbath Initiative
Forty-eight nationally recognized religious leaders, leadership of seven denominations, including the General Minister and Presidents for the UCC and the Disciples, John Thomas and Sharon Watkins, and the National Council of Churches, have joined the Religious Institute in calling for congregations to participate in the Congo Sabbath Initiative. "Congo Sabbath" is a day when congregations sponsor an educational program on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) crisis, raise funds to provide medical services to Congolese women and girls, or include a prayer during its worship service for the Congolese people. Congregations can decided when they want to focus on this issue – a particular date is not indicated. To learn more about the Congo Sabbath initiative, click here: Congo Sabbath Initiative
