CGMB Approves Missionary Appointments and a Resolution on Sri Lanka
The Common Global Ministries Board (CGMB) met in Indianapolis, April 2-4, 2009 for a "retreat" style meeting on the Disciples/UCC partnership with Robert Welch and Lydia Veliko, the Disciples and UCC Ecumenical Officers respectively, offering input and leadership. The CGMB approved the appointment of the following missionaries:

  • Scott Couper and Susan Valiquette to serve with the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa.
  • Alan Dicken to serve with the Christian Commission of Development in Honduras.
  • Tom and Monica Liddle to serve with the Protestant Church of East Timor.
  • Martha Mensendiek to serve with Doshisha University, Koyto, Japan.
  • Thomas Morse to serve with the Sichuan Radio and TV University, China.
  • Timothy Rose to serve with the Reformed Church of France in Guadeloupe and Martinique.
  • Ryan Turner to serve with the Deep Griha Society in Pune, India.
  • Bruce Van Voorhis to serve with the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs in Hong Kong.
  • Donald and Maryjane Westra to serve with the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe.
  • James and Jayanthi Wilson to serve with the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa.

WCM/GM Announces Speaker for Dinner at General Synod in Grand Rapids, MI
The Wider Church Ministries/Global Ministries Dinner will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 5pm at DeVos Place. The featured speaker will be Dr. Robert Orr, who was appointed Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Planning and Policy Coordination in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General in August 2004. He led the Secretariat's efforts to complete the UN reform agenda which was agreed to by world leaders at the 2005 World Summit. Dr. Orr served as Director of Global and Multilateral Affairs at the National Security Council, where he was responsible for peacekeeping and humanitarian affairs. Dr. Orr grew up in First Congregational Church in Santa Barbara, CA and is currently attending Park Avenue Christian Church in New York. For more information, click here:

David Vargas Publishes New Edition of His Father's Book
Co-Executive of Global Ministries and President of the Division of Overseas Ministries Reverend Dr. David A. Vargas has published a new edition of a 1988 book by his father, Reverend Joanuin Vargas, titled Los Discipulos de Cristo en Puerto Rico:  albores, crecimiento y madurez de un peregrinar de fe, constancia y esperanza 1899-1987.  The book traces the journey of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Puerto Rico with additional photos and Appendix.  David also adds several introductory pieces and a Preliminary Study by Reverend Dr. Carmelo E. Jubilee USA Network Calls for Action Following G-20 Summit
As President Obama participates in the G-20 summit in London, the World Bank projects that 53 million people will fall into poverty this year due to the global financial crisis.  The stakes are high.  You can help make sure the call for Jubilee justice is heard during the G-20 meeting and in the critical few days that follow.
