Henry Martyn Institute

Henry Martyn Institute (HMI): International Center for Research, Interfaith Relations, and Reconciliation

The Institute was founded in 1930, using the name Henry Martyn School of Islamic Studies (HMSIS) after the first Chaplain of the British East India Company. The Henry Martyn Institute is an ecumenical Christian organization which functions as an expression of the Church’s ministry of reconciliation. Their emphasis is on improving relationships between people of different faiths and traditions, and encouraging an objective and respectful knowledge of all religions, particularly Islam.

The institute has excellent research facilities and a library containing resources in the languages of Arabic, Oersian, Telugu, Urdu, and English. The institute also publishes its own Academic Journal, The Journal of the Henry Martyn Institute, which semi-annually publishes scholarly works on the understanding of Islam and the relations of other faith traditions. HMI is affiliated with several universities for the purpose of conducting and teaching research.
