Pre-Assembly Event Opening Statement

It is a joy to be with you for this pre-assembly event on peacemaking in today’s world - although, in my judgment, such an event should not be pre-assembly. Peacemaking should be front and center whenever Disciples of Christ assemble! Let me put it another way: This church shouldn’t have a peace fellowship; it should be a peace fellowship! "The beatitudes of Christ," wrote Alexander Campbell, "are not pronounced on heroes or conquerors, but on ‘peacemakers’ on whom is conferred the highest rank and title in the universe: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.’"

Missiology: Models of Mission in the 20th Century Ecumenical Movement

Created by Global Ministries and Wider Church Ministries staff, the goal of this document includes giving context and background of missiology in ecumenical circles showing that we are part of a larger tradition. United Church of Christ, Christian Church/Disciples of Christ, WCM/CGMB are part of these ecumenical theologies and missiologies at our very being. They have influenced us and we them.

Introduction - Jesus Calls Us ... to Pursue What Makes for Peace

July, 2005, marked a first-ever joint pre-assembly event sponsored by Global Ministries and Disciples Peace Fellowship. The event came just ahead of the Portland General Assembly and was inspired by Romans 14:19 ("let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding"). At a time when conflicts are raging around the world, ranging from wars to violence against women and children, Global Ministries and the Disciples Peace Fellowship chose this theme to reflect on and even challenge the church’s role in the pursuit of peace and reconciliation.

Global Ministries As A Commitment To A Common Journey

November 2006

I want to take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to Cally and David for the invitation to be here with you for this special recognition and anniversary of the CGMB. What you do today is to honor Board members and staff who worked so diligently and faithfully to establish this new ecumenical entity, the CGMB. Some of these persons are no longer with us, particularly Dr. Scott Libbey who championed the cause of unity and mission and provided so much support to this effort that I wish to dedicate this presentation this evening to their memory.

Disciples Pre Assembly Event Closing Statement

We are all indebted to our speakers for their very insightful presentations on our theme, presentations that reflected their own contexts and challenges to peacemaking. There were any number of important themes, running throughout the presentations, that I hope we will remember.

Disciples Engagement in God's Mission - Campbell-Stone Dialogue

St. Louis, Missouri

I need to begin this presentation by making a clarification. "Foreign missions" is not the terminology we use today to describe the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) participation in God's mission beyond the United States and Canada.  We refer to that involvement as Global Ministries, because we believe in mutuality in mission, which means mission is multi-directional, mission is to everywhere from everywhere.  We journey with our sisters and brothers around the world as they journey with us, sharing one another's hopes, dreams, pain, and joys.  The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ are engaged in one of the most exciting models of church unity, and it is out of that model that we have come together to share in a common witness in mission through Global Ministries.

Mission in the 21st Century

The Rev. Dr. Dhyanchard Carr served as Principal of the Tamilnadu Theological Seminary, one of our partner institutions in India.  Dr. Carr received his Ph.D. from the University of London, Faculty of New Testament in 1981.  His is a well respected voice for peace and justice in the Church and society, not only in India and Sri Lanka but also in many circles in Southern Asia.

A New Song For A New Decade

. . . to be timely and appropriately meeting God's people and creation at the point of deepest need: spiritually, physically, emotionally and/or economically. That is what we say these days is our main reason for existence, and what we claim our Critical Presence mission priority means. But is that "REALLY" true? Are we really living and reflecting in our praxis what our documents and our speech affirm so eloquently today? Are we? Are we? Friends, I have news for you this evening. Good news! YES! We are; we certainly are.
