There is a book on your reading list (The lost history of Christianity: the thousand-year golden age of the church in the Middle East, Africa and Asia - and how it died,)or you can check out these Web sites, especially the last one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syriac_Orthodox_Church (which has a photo of a Midyat church building) http://www.syrianorthodoxchurch.net/Location/Global/SOC-index-Global-en.htm (explains some history and where the name comes from) http://sor.cua.edu/Intro/index.html (explains history, rituals, etc. in some detail)

Iznik tiles were world famous! There are museums here in Istanbul dedicated to Iznik tiles and pottery produced throughout the centuries of the Ottoman Empire. But pottery making died out there. Recently it is being revived. We hope to meet some of the women artisans who are part of this revival. Return to Istanbul for overnight at the Hotel Marinem.
Iznik is both a beautiful place and an historic place. You might want to review its importance in the history of Christianity. Hint – its Greek name is Nicene. Here is a Web site to begin from: http://www.sacred-destinations.com/turkey/nicea-iznik.htm
