Pakistan Earthquake: Situation Update

A massive earthquake of 7.3 magnitude shook southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 1:23 a.m. PST. The earthquake’s depth was more than 80 kilometers underground, close to the town of Dalbandin in Balochistan Province, near the country’s borders with Iran and Afghanistan. The town of Dalbandin is home to about 15,000 people. Tremors were felt in North India including Delhi, more than 700 miles away. Shocks were also felt by the residents of the southern city of Karachi in Pakistan and in Dubai and other areas of the Middle East.

Media reports have shared that partial damage has been caused to houses in villages near Dalbandin, but there have been no reports of casualties. This remote area of Balochistan is fairly unpopulated with some isolated and scattered communities.

Global Ministries in touch with its partners and staff in the affected areas to determine if response is needed.
