Pray for Syria Sunday October 28, 2012

Lectionary reading: Mark 10:46 - 52

Prayer for Syria:
Oh God, today we pray for Syria and all its people, even as they are scattered far and wide. In this land that was touched by the feet of our Lord, and where Paul was baptized and became the Apostle of nations, the cradle of prophets and religions, we acknowledge our link to the Christian legacy and historical churches there. We fervently pray for the Syrian Christian leadership and for the country’s leaders in this precarious time.  We seek to understand and respect others and pray that the Syrian nation may find a way to work together in order to achieve peace and stability in Syria. We hold the people of Syria in our prayers, asking for solace and comfort, security and the provision of basic needs. We faithfully pray, Amen.

Mission Stewardship Moment from Syria:
Amidst continuing violence, even as yet another car bomb has killed 13 people and injured 29 in the Christian quarter of Damascus’s old city, Global Ministries is actively involved in relief efforts  in Syria and with Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey through One Great Hour of Sharing (UCC) and the Week of Compassion (Disciples) offerings.

Countless numbers of Christians and Muslims are victims of the violence; the hospitals are full and many more have fled from their homes, having no job or source of income.

The current and most pressing needs in Syria are for assistance with healthcare, food, and shelter, in addition to hygiene parcels, infant supplies, and bedding sets. Syrian families are simply running out of resources for daily living as the chaos from the war continues to engulf the country. Emergency financial support is being directed from our US churches to mission partners in the region.
