Mission Co-worker Appointments of Larry and Debbie Colvin

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana is a self-governing church in Africa, and a long-standing partner of Global Ministries. It has strong roots in the reformed tradition, with over 600,000 members and 500 congregations throughout Ghana. The church is committed to a variety of ministries including spiritual and church growth, education, public health, cultural preservation efforts, and reforestation projects. Founded by the Breman Mission of Germany among the Ewe people of what was then considered German Togoland in 1840s, the church was one of the first in the African continent to adopt its own constitution in 1922.

As the first nation in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence in 1957, Ghana is also one of West Africa’s most stable countries, financially and politically. The country of Ghana has large Muslim and Christian populations and the two groups work hard at good relations. The majority of Ghana’s economic growth is concentrated in the southern coast, which has more access to markets, fertile farming land, transportation infrastructure, and industrial hubs. Since 2013, the Ghanaian economy is working to tackle a recent growth in public deficit, high inflation, and a weakening currency. Gold, cocoa, and more recently oil have provided the historical stability for Ghana’s economy.

The EP Church, Ghana has requested Reverend Dr. Larry Colvin’s assistance as a professor at Peki Seminary located on the campus of the Evangelical Presbyterian University in Ho, Ghana. Prior to Larry’s current ministry as a Regional Minister with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mid-America, Larry was a Global Ministries mission co-worker for ten years as with the United Congregational Church of South Africa and the Kgologano College of Garborone in Botswana. Larry served as a local church pastor of Disciples and UCC congregations in Illinois, Texas, and Missouri. Larry’s experience as a theological professor in an African context, a local church pastor, and Regional Minister will be a significant contribution to the seminary.

Debbie Duthorn Colvin is invited to assist the EP Church, Ghana’s public health ministries, such as their mobile health clinic public health programs. Due to the tropical climate in the Ghana, the risk and prevalence of waterborne and insect-borne diseases are heightened. Debbie has worked in the medical field for over 30 years as a Medical Assistant, with the majority of her experience in Urgent Care and more recently in Nephrology and Dialysis. Debbie’s training, certification, and experience as a Medical Assistant will be a wonderful asset to the church’s health programs.

ghana2.jpgWith its current level of funding, Global Ministries already has reached the maximum number of mission co-workers it is able to support without additional funds. Therefore a new funding mechanism was originated in 2013, through action by the Common Global Ministries Board, in order to increase the number of individuals serving in mission alongside global partners around the world.

Global Ministries must raise the funds necessary to cover the Colvins’ three-year appointment and their six-month home assignment in the U.S. at the conclusion of their time in Ghana. This is the fifth personalized fundraising campaign Global Ministries has carried out since 2013. The other four efforts successfully placed mission co-workers in Mozambique, Thailand, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and East Timor.
