Presence in Times of Grief

When we stepped across the threshold into Kodae’s house in Lospalos, I could tell he wasn’t breathing. His younger brother was sitting beside him on the dingy mattress he had been on for months, shooing flies away from the pale corpse. The boy turned to us with tears in his eyes. Their father appeared from a side room. “He just died,” he announced on seeing us. It was four in the afternoon, the sun was shining, and it was very quiet.

This morning as I walked to the elevator, all disguised in my sunglasses and anti-particulate face mask, I exchanged pleasantries with a neighbor who sounded a bit like an Aussie. (We’ve got some diversity in this building, with Filipino, Thai, Korean, European expats, and even a Detroiter.)

Freedom, Honesty and Friendship

If you open your browser and type in "Seko, North Luwu, South Sulawesi," the satellite image will show you a yellowish patch surrounded by dense forest. That patch is the dry bed of an ancient lake where the Seko people have been cultivating rice and raising buffalo for centuries.
