Typhoon and Tropical Storm Morakot Report from the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan
Following news reports in the international media the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) received several messages from overseas concerning the typhoon and tropical storm Morakot that struck Taiwan the weekend 7-10 August 2009.

The origin of the Seamen’s / Fishermen’s Service Center begin with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) General Assembly Church and Society (formerly called Social Service and Development Committee). It came to the attention of several committee members that the number of Taiwanese ships meeting disasters at sea and detainment in foreign ports was steadily increasing. Led by their faith and based on Christian commitment, they decided to enact a program to support Taiwan fishing community.

Protestant mission work, that continues to this day, began the year 1865 in Tainan with the arrival of Dr. James L. Maxwell sent by the Presbyterian Church of England (now the United Reformed Church [URC]). Dr. Maxwell and colleagues were soon followed by Rev. Dr. George L. Mackay from the Canadian Presbyterian Mission (the Presbyterian Church in Canada [PCC]) who began mission work in Tamsui in 1872. Roman Catholic missionaries came to Taiwan somewhat earlier, however. From the efforts of the British missionaries in the south and the Canadian missionaries in the north, a Taiwanese Presbyterian Church began to take shape. 1865 is considered the founding year of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT).
