Pray with Fiji on Sunday, December 2, 2018

Fiji_2017_Niko_Tapaeko_02.jpegLectionary Selection:  Luke 21:25-36

Prayers for Fiji:

Creator God, Lord of the land and sea, we are grateful for the beauty of the world. We see your hand working miraculously in everything that we have touched and defiled because of our greed. The ocean used to roar in praise and awe at your marvelous and majestic work. But now it roars in pain, its surface becoming warmer evermore that it spews out unpredictable storms that have swallowed our people without mercy.

The land cries for help, bleeding from the exploitation of our governments and corporate organizations in the name of economic development. We are seeing the signs of our greed. For many of us in the Pacific, these are the last days. Our homes will be taken away by the ocean, our language, cultures, and identity will soon forever disappear from the face of earth.

Fiji_2017_Niko_Tapaeko_05.jpegBut Lord, our hope is in you. Our strength is in our vulnerability. That when it seems like we have lost everything, we have a voice – a voice that swells deep from our weakness. Our conviction and faith in you causes us to rise despite our insignificance in terms of population, we rise, we rise above the odds and fight for our homes, our future generations, and our earth.

We pray Lord that you continue to be beside us, walk with us, swim with us, and cry with us. And may the day come that our tears be dried and hearts comforted, knowing that efforts are not in vain. This we pray in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, who died to make everything new. Amen.

Pray with Lebanon on Sunday, November 25, 2018

Lebanon_Maria_Bakalian_Christ_the_King_Statue.jpegLectionary Selection:  John 18:33-37

Prayers for Lebanon:

Almighty God. You are creator of all. You are the blessed and only Ruler. We come before you and praise you, for you are Lord of lords and King of kings.

You use your authority as the Omnipotent in ways unlike earthly kings.

Your rule brings peace and unity.

Your authority originates from doing the will of God.

We praise you for teaching us by example, to serve in humility. You who are Sovereign are found in the most unlikely places. You are with the refugee families in their tents and temporary housing. You are with the foreign workers who lack the most basic of legal protections. You bring light and truth into the darkest of places and situations. When we are impatient as we wait for better living conditions, better financial conditions, and for lasting peace, help us to see you and feel your presence, and acknowledge your sovereignty and Regal rule over the entire universe.

As the people of Lebanon face difficulty upon difficulty, help them to never lose hope in Christ the King. Monarchs and leaders come and go, but you are the same, yesterday, today and forever.

God of hope and light, fill us with trust in Christ our Savior.

Pray with Mexico on Sunday, November 18, 2018

Mexico_Cara_McKinney_20181013_104734b.jpgLectionary Selection:  Mark 13:1-8

Prayers for Mexico

Mother and Father God,

Today we pray for our brothers and sisters in Mexico as they work towards creating a country where girls can grow up to be who they want to be and do what they want to do. Please bring strength and compassion to the people who are fighting for girls’ rights.

Help us to challenge stereotypes and gender roles in our own communities and walk with those who need a little nudge to make changes. Guide our hands and our words so that we can make this world a better place for the girls of today and the generations of tomorrow.

We ask that you continue to guide our feet in the walk towards equality and justice, and that you open the hearts of the people who do not yet understand the plight of young girls around the world.

Dearest God, we thank you for wisdom and for the courage you have given us.

Pray with Kenya on Sunday, November 11, 2018

aacc.pngLectionary Selection: Mark 1:14-20

Prayers for Kenya:

Dear God,

As we gather to worship you, fill us with anticipation and prepare us by your Spirit. Be the first thought in our hearts and help us to be conscious of your direction. Strengthen us for service, nourish us with the bread of life, transform us for mission.

We know that we have preferred to stay with the questions rather than to look for solutions in the global provision of food and resources. Forgive us that we have kept what we have to ourselves rather than offering it up to you for your blessing so that you might feed and sustain others. Forgive us that we have forgotten to gather up the pieces and have failed to be concerned about the waste that our society produces. Be for us here the Bread of Heaven, and feed and renew us so that we might share in your purpose in giving life to the world.

In Kenya, as well as in other parts of the continent of Africa, people are dying from hunger though you have blessed our nations with good weather and fertile soil. Be the real bread of life to many who are struggling in their daily life.

I believe that you have heard our prayer in Jesus name.

Pray with Colombia on Sunday, November 4, 2018

IMG_20180930_110202.jpegLectionary Selection:  Mark 12:28-34

Prayers for Colombia:

Loving God, today we pray for the country of Colombia and our Global Ministries partners there. Laying down weapons of war after fifty years of internal armed conflict is not easy. But you commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and the people of Colombia are attempting to do just that through a comprehensive peace accord, signed in 2016. Today we pray for partner churches located in the regions where thousands of former guerrilla combatants are reentering civilian life. Give IMG_20180930_183339.jpegthem courage and knowledge to best know how to minister in these complex times. We pray for our partner organizations, Justapaz, of the Mennonite Church of Colombia and the Peace Commission of the Evangelical Council of Colombia as they implement peacebuilding programs while still facing considerable threat in unstable times. Through the practice of radical love, may we draw near to your kingdom.

Pray with Indonesia on Sunday, October 28, 2018

Lectionary Selection:  Mark 10:46-52

Prayers for Indonesia:

Yesus, Son of God, have mercy on the people of Indonesia. Tens of thousands are grieving and homeless after the earthquakes and tsunamis on the islands of Lombok and Sulawesi. Thousands are still missing, and their families can only trust that their loved ones have found shelter in Your mercy. As Muslims and Christians, Hindus and Buddhists face a common grief, may they rediscover their common bonds of humanity as well. Calm this troubled earth, calm our hearts, that we may rebuild and start life again in hope. Amen.

Pray with Ecuador on Sunday, October 21, 2018

Lectionary Selection: Mark 10:35-45

Prayers for Ecuador:

fedice.pngOh Lord, this life can be tough. You know that. Your Son experienced it. Beggars from Venezuela, jugglers and buskers from Colombia, women without resources to give a good beginning to their children, little children who care for their younger siblings, youth who cannot find jobs, borrowers who cannot pay their debts, dogs too weak to search for food.

James and John asked to sit on the right and left. Our prayers are filled with wanting: Give me ….  Help my family ….  Make it possible for me to ….

Oh Lord, when will there be justice? If I am to drink the cup and share the fate, what am I to do? I cannot even help the poor animal lying on the side of the road that is only bones and skin. We too want to sit on the right and the left, but why must we drink of the cup? Why can’t You just make it fair?

Pray with the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, October 14, 2018

Lectionary Selection: Mark 10:17-31

Prayers for the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

Eternal Spirit,

Thank you for your enduring presence in DR Congo, where people know they pray to a living God who cares for his people. Thank you for dedicated men and women from around the world who came to the Equator Province to fight the deadly ebola virus. The examples solidarity and generosity not only demonstrate compassion and empathy, but also an interdependence that is humanity’s strength, not its vulnerability. We praise you for this glimpse of your kingdom, and will trust you till the day when it is fully realized.

Bless the Community of Disciples of Christ in Congo (CDCC) and all who work for peace and social change in DR Congo. Grant them wisdom and power; strengthen their resolve to be salt of the earth and light of the world. We stand on the word that says “righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne”, so we put the outcome of this year’s presidential election in your hands with renewed hopes for peace and reconciliation.

O Lord, bring about a peace that is not just the absence of conflict, but a peace accompanied by justice for the poor, for the people of DR Congo are some the poorest in the world. May this fact, convict the world toward selfless acts of solidarity and generosity as well.

In the Mighty Name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Pray with Mexico on Sunday, October 7, 2018

mexico_jerri_handy_01.jpgLectionary Selection:Mark 10:35-45

Prayers for Mexico:

On this World Communion Sunday, oh God of love and mercy, may we open our hearts, not only, to the reality of your love for us as individuals beloved, but also, to your call to serve. As we come to your table to share this meal of bread and cup; open our hearts, our minds, our arms to the life-giving ritual where everyone in welcome.

Oh God of mercy and grace, open our eyes to the reality of service in your name is valuable even necessary as we seek to follow the teachings of Jesus.

Oh God of Grace and wonder open paths before us, paths that lead us to see the value and dignity in those we serve more than seeking to be recognized for the service we offer.

Oh God of wonder and mystery, touch our hearts anew with the spiritual truth that, as we celebrate this World Communion Sunday, not only, do we share in communion meals around the world, but also, with the saints of old.   May it be so, Amen.

Pray with Zambia on Sunday, September 30, 2018

Zambia_Robert_Breckenridge_image001.jpegLectionary Selection:  Mark 9: 38-50

Prayers for Zambia:

Lord of all,

In your great mercy, forgive us our many failures. Some of us enjoy such bounty - comfort, leisure, wealth, education and more - but we neglect to look, see and assist those ‘little ones’ who struggle in want, perched precariously on the precipice of despair.

Bless your servants in Zambia and in the United Church of Zambia.

Bless our farmers waiting through the dry season for the rains so they can plant crops to feed themselves and hungry children.

Bless our poor who scarcely find enough work to support their families, obtain medical care, or pay school fees.

Bless our churches, clinics, and educational institutions, especially the UCZ University, where hardworking students scrape together their tuition fees so they can learn skills needed for healthcare, education, social work, agriculture, and for ministry in your church.

Bless our teachers, administrators, and staff who make do with meager resources yet produce competent and morally excellent professionals.

Bless Zambia’s leaders in government, education and commerce so that they may be inspired to eradicate corruption and serve people honestly, with humility and enthusiasm.

Have mercy on us who are sometimes blind, even with two eyes, who are lame, even with two feet and who are ineffective, even with two hands.

Thank you for showing us the right way. Lead us ahead, we ask, in Jesus’ blessed name.
