Pray with Greece on Sunday June 24, 2018

Nursery_2.jpegLectionary Selection: Mark 4:35-41

Prayers for Greece:

O Creator God, it can be hard to find grounding when we feel as though our lives are adrift with storms swirling all around us. Please, fill us with your comforting presence and show us the way forward. Open our hearts to follow your call and help us to work for justice in the world around us. At this time, people around the world are more aware of human migration than ever, but there is still so much to be done on a practical level. Great Creator, help us to pray with our hands and our feet, not just with our hearts, in the midst of this heartbreaking situation.

IMG_7644.jpegFor leaders around the world, we pray that they will handle the current situation of refugees with sensitivity and care, remembering that these are individual people with innate human dignity, created in the image of God. Help our leaders to have sound hearts and minds when making practical and financial decisions about this work – for it will impact millions of people for generations to come.

For our partners at Perichoresis, a refugee response organization related to the Evangelical Church of Greece, we pray for wisdom as they interact with so many people and difficult cases. We ask you to bless them with a spirit of sensitivity towards their beneficiaries from around the world, all seeking shelter and safety. Give them clear minds to make loving decisions in matters big and small. Help them continue to develop a spirit of inclusion not only in their work but in their daily lives.

Pray with Japan on Sunday, June 10, 2018

Japan_Jeff_Mensendiek_21.jpegLectionary Selection: Mark 3:20-35

Prayers for Japan:

God, your Spirit opens us to new patterns of relationship,

Just as Jesus sat with like-minded people and called them his family, allow us to embrace people who have a common heart for peace and dialogue, and to see them as family. At this time we are particularly mindful Japan_Jeff_Mensendiek_23.jpegof the people of East Asia, as leaders gather to discuss the de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. We know that the road to overcoming divisiveness and building trusting relationships will not be easy, but we place our trust in your hands, and in the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer requests from our partners at the NCCJ.

  • Please pray, in the spirit of Article 9, for lasting peace among the nations of northeast Asia.
  • Please pray that those who soon meet to discuss peace on the Korean Peninsula will be guided by the Holy Spirit.

Pray with Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday June 3, 2018

drc_james_IMG_1163.jpegLectionary Selection: Mark 2:23-3:6

Prayers for Democratic Republic of Congo:

Father God,

Our faith teaches us love and joyful service. Each day, may our deeds and our words reflect your teachings and guidance. Just as Jesus responded with love and kindness by healing the man’s shriveled hand in the synagogue, so shall we respond in kindness and faith to needs as they present themselves. (Mark 2:23-3:6)

Christ’s commitment to us is everlasting and without rules, boundaries or timelines. While rest and reflection on the Sabbath are important for our spiritual journey, so too is living our faith as we serve others in our daily lives. Please guide us as we are presented with opportunities to serve the people of Congo for your glory through the work of the Congo Protestant University.

You have created us all in your image. May we remain true to your teachings.

Thy will be done.

Pray with Mexico on Sunday May 27, 2018

Mexico_Carlos_Sediles_IMG-20180425-WA0000.jpegLectionary Selection: John 3:1-17

Prayers for Mexico:

God of the Past, the Present and the Future,

We thank you for the new life you give us in your Son Jesus, through whom we can participate in your kingdom. Thank you for Jesus, our light and bearer of a new creation.

We affirm our faith in the missionary God, who so loved the world that he gave his Son to save us. In the midst of so much pain and suffering, we affirm that Jesus, the son of God, accompanies us on our pilgrimage.

We testify to the arrival of the kingdom of God as a new time (kairos). Full and lasting life takes place here and now in the midst of the communities where we serve.

We receive your love as an expression of salvation, as an act of a God who offers with generosity. Your love without limits is for everyone without discrimination, exclusion or marginalization.

We celebrate the incarnation of God in Jesus. With the sending of his Son, God confronts the powers of darkness and death, and offers us a full and abundant life.

We work in Mexico to live out the values of your kingdom. Grant us the strength to live into a new time of health and well-being for all, especially for those who suffer from poverty, exploitation and violence.

We pray that your Spirit may descend upon your church and cause us to be born to a new life in Christ. Come, Holy Spirit and unite us as sisters and brothers in favor of life, justice and peace! In Christ our Lord. Amen.

palestine_separation_wall_2016.jpegLectionary Selection: John 15:26-27:16:4b-15

Prayers for Israel/Palestine:

Come Comforter, Holy Spirit, Love Divine: descend upon your people – Israelis and Palestinians – in this land. Reveal to them a new vision of reconciliation amid conflict, and open before them new paths for peace. Uphold their pursuits of justice and righteousness in the face of violations against their humanity. Fortify their courage and tenacity for hope when despair assaults them and frustrates their quest for the promise of abundant life. Pour out your grace upon them to overcome evil with good. And, help us all –individually and collectively – as a Church, and as a nation - to be instruments of your grace and channels of your peace. Amen.

Pray with Sierra Leone on Sunday May 13, 2018

Sierra_Leone_Nia_Sullivan_image3.jpegLectionary Selection: John 17:6-19

Prayers for Sierra Leone:

God of peace,

We praise you for directing us towards unity. We know that through unity we reach joy, love, and protection. Today we pray for guidance toward visible unity so that we can overcome brokenness and reject oppressive practices such as colonialist values, racism, and economic domination. We praise you for Christian unity that translates to love and justice.

Father, we ask you for continued peace and undividedness in Sierra Leone as we go through transitions in the government. We pray for clarity and strength for all who work for love and dignity to be realities for all. To this end, we pray for those who seek to disrupt childhood marriage practices that exploit young girls and for the dismantling of the unspeakably horrible tradition of female genital mutilation that serves no purpose other than to subjugate and control the lives of women and girls. We pray for the victims of such practices that they would know freedom, experience healing, and live lives of wholeness that flow from the power of your love and the value of your dignity.

May everyone be transformed through Christian unity. Amen.

Pray with Hong Kong May 6, 2018

Lectionary Selection: John 15:9-17

Prayers for Hong Kong:

O God, your Son gave a new commandment to his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion: “Love one another as I have loved you.” The disciples already knew the great commandments to love God and neighbor. Now Jesus makes crystal clear what more that love requires courage, passion, and the willingness to sacrifice our very lives to bring about Your reign of justice and peace. In Hong Kong, we thank You for the freedoms that others have sacrificed and even died for so that we may enjoy them today – freedom of the press, assembly, association, expression and religion. We know how these freedoms are easily taken for granted or can slowly erode through external and internal forces. May the people and the Church of Hong Kong continue to guard these precious human rights for the city and the nation as they bear fruit that will last for many generations to come. Amen.

Pray with Hungary on Sunday, April 29, 2018

Hungary_2004_Evan_Golder_11.JPGLectionary Selection: 1 John 4:7-21

Prayers for Hungary:

Loving God,

Thank you for the gift of love. Thank you for your indiscriminate acceptance of all people. Sometimes it is hard to understand, accept, and love those who are different, and sometimes there is fear because of the differences. Fill our hearts with your love. Open our hearts and minds to the new perspectives and help us to see the similarities that bind us together. Give us the courage to connect with those who are different, and allow us to find you in surprising ways.

Today we pray for the Refugee Ministry and the Roma Mission of the Reformed Church in Hungary. As our world changes, there is increasing fear of those who are different from us. In this time, we must remember that every person we encounter is someone who is loved and treasured. In the Refugee Ministry, I lift up the wonderful staff of Kalunba Social Services Ltd. Please provide the staff with the wisdom and strength to carry on in their mission in providing the necessities for refugees to find a safe home and a caring community. In the Roma Mission, we pray for the Gypsy (Roma) youth and children. There are more and more children turning to drugs, alcohol and prostitution. Please surround the children with people to love and guide them. Wrap your arms of grace around them, and fill our hearts with the same compassion and love to be a pillar of strength in their lives. Empower us to meet each person as one who is worthy and deeply loved.

In the loving name of Jesus, Amen.

Pray with Mexico on Sunday, April 22, 2018

Lectionary Selection: John 10:11-18

Prayers for Mexico:

Today we pray for Mexico, caught in the shadow between light and darkness.

In the womb where nativity waits,
In the grey fog before dawn,
In the curve of the tunnel hiding the exit,
In time suspended, half-way, no longer there, not yet beyond.
Between despair and hope shared,
            but not yet fulfilled.
Between fear and courage opening its wings
            but not yet alight.
Between sadness and joy bubbling up from the depths
            but not yet overflowing.
Between suffering and justice opening its hands
            but not yet embracing.
Between hate and the seed of love planted
            but not yet germinating.
In Mexico,
The shadows incubate dignity to be born.
The shadows solemnly announce the joy of new day.
The shadows excitedly predict a new breath of freedom.
The shadows stretch us irresistibly towards the light.
As the shadows point the path to the sun,
So our faith leads us on the path of peace.
Here, in the land of the eagle and the jaguar,
The cactus and the chocolate tree,
Where the sun hides behind the mountains
and beyond shimmering seas,
shalom is forged in these shadowlands.

(Prayer originally in Spanish. Written and translated by Elena Huegel.)
