Weekly Prayers

Pray for Ecuador on Sunday, February 12, 2017

Sua_1.jpgLectionary Selection: Matthew 5:21-37

Prayers for Ecuador:

Loving God,

As we go about our normal days we often forget to go above and beyond what is required of us. We remember the laws but we forget what it means to truly live for and by your name. We tithe and make offerings to our churches but we forget to volunteer or support another person in need. God, please help us to know what it means to go above and beyond, to love you and follow the laws of the land but also to put everything we’ve got into truly living in your image.

Sua_2.jpgAs we pray for and with our partners in Ecuador this week, we ask that you guide our thoughts and our prayers to envelope not only our partners, but all the people of the country, from the Amazonian rain forest to the Andean highlands to the coastal lowlands and the Galapagos Islands where we see the beauty of God’s awesome creation. We ask that you help each of us to take those extra steps to truly serve you in everything we do.

In your loving name we pray,
Amen

Pray for Mozambique on Sunday, January 29, 2017

Mozambique_2016_Erik_Free_01.jpegLectionary Selection: Matthew 5:1-12

Prayers for Mozambique:
God of peace, we pray today for our sisters and brothers in Mozambique. We ask your hand of blessing to continue to rest gently upon their country, to inspire your peace in their leaders and their people. May our partner church, the United Church of Christ in Mozambique, continue to be inspired by your love in their work as peacemakers and conduits of your blessing in the world.

Lord, there are people in Mozambique who suffer from hunger and little access to fresh foods.

Use your people to bless them with abundance and the bounty of the earth.

Lord, there are people in Mozambique who live in fear of violence.

Comfort them with your Holy Spirit and inspire peace in the hearts of those who would do violence.

Lord, there are people in Mozambique striving after you and your kingdom. Bless them with the knowledge that they are not alone, that they have your Spirit within them and the prayers of others around the world supporting them.

God of Grace and Blessing, we lift up the people of Mozambique with these prayers today which we ask in your Son Jesus' name, Amen.

Pray for Egypt on Sunday, January 22, 2017

CEOSS_Pic_1.jpegLectionary Selection: Matthew 4:12-23

Prayers for Egypt:

Loving and Peaceful God!

We thank you today for those who heard your call to join Jesus in his mission and answered willingly. Will you continue to bless those, who like Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John, continue to serve in your mission? May this blessing extend to those who saw suffering in their communities around the globe and through you decided to bring relief to those who suffered.

We ask you to guide us to become a part of your mission for this world. Help us to hear how we might be called to serve others, and CEOSS_Pic_2.jpeglead our hands to answer Jesus’ call.

In your son’s name we pray,
Amen

Pray for Indonesia on Sunday, January 8, 2017

ETimor-Indonesia-11-04_070.jpgLectionary Selection: Matthew 3:13-17

Prayers for Indonesia:

O Great Shepherd, unite us in prayer with the churches of Indonesia as they seek to discern and bear witness to your Word of hope and salvation. Be with our brothers and sisters gathered today in worship across the islands—in the militarized regions of Papua, next to chemically-saturated rice paddies in Java, longing to be heard amidst the cosmopolitan confusion of Jakarta, struggling to survive on the parched plains of south Timor, resting from their labor on palm oil plantations in Kalimantan. Grant these your sheep, guidance for their journeys, protection from exploitation, and comfort in the face of loss and despair. We pray for the Church of West Timor. May its new leadership encourage repentance, heal wounded relationships, reform broken systems, instill hope and be strengthened by your grace. We pray for the Christian University in West Timor. Bless its teachers and students that they may grow together through research, study, reflection, and community service. Help especially the Theology Faculty and its Truth and Reconciliation Team as it seeks to break a long tradition of campus violence. O God, make your presence known in all these places that your sheep may be saved.  Amen.

Prayers for Kenya:

Creator God, this new year help us not to take our lead from the many boisterous voices around us, rewire us by your grace that we might speak and act with Godly boldness and trust in you.

Pray for:

  • Peaceful, fair, and transparent elections in Kenya and continued national stability in Kenya.
  • The gender equality for the girl child when it comes to education, health care, early/forced marriages.
  • The emerging serious impact of climate change affecting countries in Africa such as Ethiopia, East Africa, and Southern Africa causing lost of cattle, food shortages, and lack of water.

Pray for Sri Lanka on Sunday, December 25, 2016

20151027_141551.jpegLectionary Selection: Luke 2:1-14 (15-20)

Prayers for Sri Lanka:
It's Christmas, O Holy One. We give thanks that the season and the day are here. For two thousand years the birth day of Jesus has been a time to remember; celebrate and remember your gifts of love and hope, peace and joy. We remember also what our world is like now; wars, natural disasters, climate change, greed and poverty, food enough for all people but not enough desire to send it where it is needed.

Too many needs unmet, too many tragedies unavoided.
And still this is the season of hope, peace, love and joy.

Perhaps your greatest gift to the world is not giving up on us . . . every year at Christmas your gift comes again and we are refreshed, renewed, and remember hope, peace, love and joy, and we give thanks for your gift.  Amen

Pray for the Dominican Republic on Sunday, December 18, 2016

20161117_100218.jpegLectionary Selection: Matthew 1:18-25

Prayers for the Dominican Republic:

Holy Creator,

You have given us many ways to receive your messages and love your creation better. Open our minds so that we receive dreams the way Joseph did. Soften our hearts so that we act with empathy in our relationships the way Joseph did. Strengthen our courage so that we accept the challenges you present to us in this life.

We lift up the developing partnerships of Caminante. Bless them as they journey into new projects and communities. Keep us ready to learn of new and challenging ways to honor them as our partner in mission.

May their deepest need be met by your unending love. May they continue to choose us as a companion in this work of making things on Earth as they are in Heaven.

Amen.

Pray for Hong Kong on Sunday, December 11, 2016

2016_hong_kong_van_voorhis.jpg
During a field visit to the Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise (COPE), the participants of the ICF human rights workshop learn about the hundreds of people in Laos who are still killed or disabled each year by unexploded “bombies” dispersed by cluster bombs by the United States during the Vietnam War.

Lectionary Selection: Matthew 11:2-11

Prayers for Hong Kong:
Lord, during this season of Advent, this season of waiting and expectation, we tell ourselves that you, indeed, are the One we are waiting for, that we are looking for no one else. But is this really true?

During your time among us, you restored the life of those who were blind, were lame, were sick, were deaf, were dead, were poor. In short, you gave fullness of life and dignity to those who were marginalized by society and who felt scorned. With the renewal of their lives and their spirits, you transformed them. These examples and teachings are what you have passed to us.

You also blessed those “who take no offense at me.”

We again would proclaim that we take no offense toward you; but when we survey our world today, we do take offense to you and the fullness of life you brought to us and your message of love, compassion, justice and peace to be shown to all people. We must confess that we do treat with contempt those who are a different race, a different nationality, a different faith; we sow divisions among ourselves even though we are all created in your image and are all children of God.

In our scripture passage today, you asked the crowds what did they seek when they went out into the wilderness with John the Baptist. We could ask the same question of ourselves: What do we expect to see in the wilderness of our world today? What are we looking for? Why? Will we know it when we find it?

In Hong Kong, we are not exempt from this message, for our society is fractured between the haves and have-nots. We have one of the world’s greatest gaps in income distribution between those who control the price of our daily necessities and the rest of us; our housing is among the most unaffordable globally so hundreds of thousands of our neighbors live in so-called coffin cubicles or caged homes or are McRefugees sleeping overnight in 24-hour fast food restaurants; migrant women who clean our homes and care for our children are viewed as second-class workers; asylum-seekers and refugees are perceived as merely economic migrants; and racial minorities, even those who are born here and speak Cantonese, feel the pain of discrimination.

Lord, we are in need of your message as much, or even more, than the people 2,000 years ago. We pray for your love and peace to fill us, your wisdom to guide us, in Hong Kong and the world today. Transform us, Lord, so that we can transform others. Amen.
