Pray for Honduras on Sunday, July 26, 2015

“Surely this is the Prophet that has come into the world. “

Prayers for Honduras:
Dear Creator of all things good, we know of your love all of creation, yet we struggle to understand why there is disease and hunger and inequity. We know you are walking along side us in this imperfect yet perfect world. We implore you today to work through us to feed the bodies and spirit of our mothers and fathers, sisters and brother in Honduras and worldwide.

Thank you for sending your Son to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. Give to us, his disciples, the strength, the will and the resources to continue Jesus’s work of feeding and healing.

Amen.

2015_Honduras_Westra_3.jpegMission Stewardship Moment from Honduras:
In the 1960’s a missionary doctor, Dr. Joyce Baker, came to Honduras and originated four rural health centers. She worked alongside local health care providers who worked tirelessly to serve those with acute illnesses as well as improve long term health and nutrition. Starting in 2006, Honduras’ infrastructure was decimated by global recession and local political turmoil, taking with it three of the four clinics founded by Dr. Joyce Baker. Fortunately, the buildings continue to be cared for by the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Honduras. They are in sound condition only needing minor repairs and updated equipment. In one rural community of Subirana in the district of Yoro, leaders organized to reopen the clinic. They held community meetings to assess needs and they cleaned up the building. On June 6, the village, with support from the E&R Church, hosted a team of four visiting Honduran doctors. Community members staffed the clinic, served food and water and cleaned up afterwards. Two-hundred fifteen people were seen by doctors for  illnesses including worms, asthma, various infections and chikungunya. Medications were purchased by the church and villagers paid $1 to see a doctor. The village looks forward to the day when the clinic can again be staffed full time.
