Pray for Indonesia on Sunday, December 21, 2014

Lectionary Selection: Luke 1:46b–55

Prayers for Indonesia:
God of justice, God of mercy, we praise you for the miracle of hope born first in Mary’s heart, and echoed in the hearts of millions of young women in Indonesia and other parts of the world, who are often treated as just another commodity to be bought and sold.  They trust in you to bring down the powerful from their thrones and to lift them up to a better life.  Their faith gives us strength, their praise fills our hearts.  Give your strength to all those who struggle with them to build a democracy and bring justice to Indonesia.  Amen.

Mission Stewardship Moment from Indonesia:
Ery Ndoen escaped by threatening to leap from a fourth floor window at the factory in which she and 25 other Timorese young women had been imprisoned for the past four years.  Her reports to the police were ignored because members of the police are part of the human trafficking industry that sends thousands of Timorese young people to Indonesian and Malaysian cities, factories, and plantations under conditions that amount to a modern form of slavery.  When two of Ery’s friends died of illness and malnutrition, the case finally came into the public eye.  Ampera, the Timor Alliance Against Human Trafficking, accompanied their bodies back to their home villages and assisted in returning the surviving young women to their families after their release.  They continue to monitor the case and lobby for bringing the perpetrators to justice.  Among Ampera’s most active members are teachers and students of the Theology Faculty of Artha Wacana Christian University, a CGMB partner institution.  We thank you for your support for the kind of theological education that includes action for justice as a part of the preparation for ministry.
