In China, eighty percent of the citizens live in rural areas, including the village of Shuangmiao in Henan Province. Life is difficult there: most people farm to support their families, and many peasant farmers struggle to pay leases on their land and their homes. In the mid 1990’s, a large number of people in the Shuangmiao village made money by selling their blood to private companies, who, in turn, sold it to clinics. HIV was transmitted when the same needle was used on many people. Today, one in every three people in Shuangmiao is infected with HIV. Subsequently, over 100 children in the village have been orphaned and still more have been left to care for themselves by parents who are too sick to provide for their children.

Global Ministries has partnered with Chinese agencies and medical schools to bring financial and medical support to the people in Shuangmiao infected with HIV. The delivery of medical equipment on May 8, 2005 is part of those efforts.
