B’Tselem: Palestinian activist Awdah al-Hathaleen filmed settler Yinon Levi shooting him
In video footage obtained by B’Tselem, filmed by al-Hathaleen himself, Levi is seen shooting at him. The footage is immediately cut off as the injured al-Hathaleen collapsed.
Awdah al-Hathaleen, a human rights activist and resident of the village of Umm al-Kheir in the South Hebron Hills, was killed on July 28 by live fire shot at him by the settler Yinon Levi.
Levi, previously placed under US sanctions for violence attacks against Palestinians, invaded the Masafer Yatta community of Um al-Kheir last week (July 28) with an excavator. While residents tried to make him leave, Levi opened fire and killed al- Hathaleen. The next day, the police released Levi from custody and placed him under house arrest, citing lack of evidence and accepting his claim of self-defense.
On August 1, Levi was released from house arrest. On August 4, he was once again filmed invading Um al-Kheir land, accompanied by another armed settler.
B’Tselem CEO Yuli Novak said: “In Gaza and the West Bank, Palestinians are completely exposed to Israeli violence: stripped from their human rights, left with no protection. Awdah’s killing is yet another horrifing example of how the world stands by while Israelis, soldiers or civilians, kill Palestinians in broad daylight, knowing they will have full impunity.”
