An Appeal for the Daisy Dube Children Home

An Appeal for the Daisy Dube Children Home

Dear Friends of Global Ministries,

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” James 1:27

On July 13, tragedy struck the Daisy Dube Children’s Home in Mt. Selinda, Zimbabwe. A devastating fire destroyed the entire building, leaving little more than cinderblock walls and a foundation. We give thanks that all the children and their caretakers were safe, but the home itself was a total loss.

The 22 children who lived at Daisy Dube have since been moved into a wing of the nursing student dormitories at Mt. Selinda Hospital. Several charitable organizations generously stepped in to provide immediate needs, such as clothing and school uniforms, but the children remain displaced. We want to help them return home.

Our partners in the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe have created a plan to rebuild. Instead of one large orphanage, they will construct four cottages on the original site. Each cottage will house eight children and a caretaker. This model is both a government requirement and a more nurturing environment for the children. In addition, the Zimbabwean government has pledged to install a solar array to power the new cottages.

This effort is significant. The cost of each cottage, including labor and materials, is estimated at $80,000. Our immediate goal is to raise $240,000 to complete at least three cottages before November, when the rainy season could delay construction. With three cottages, all the children can return to their new homes.

The New Hampshire Conference of the United Church of Christ is leading the way in supporting this effort. We now invite you to join in this vital ministry. Together, through God’s grace, we can help rebuild the Daisy Dube Children’s Home.
