Pray with Samoa, November 8, 2026
Lectionary Selection: Matthew 25:1-13
Prayers for Samoa

Creator God,
you spread the waters across the earth
and filled the ocean with life.
We give thanks for Samoa,
for its people, churches, villages, and communities,
and for generations whose lives have been sustained by the gifts of land and sea.
Keep us watchful, O God.
Like the wise bridesmaids who tended their lamps and prepared for what was coming,
give us wisdom to recognize the choices before us and courage to act before harm cannot be undone.
We pray for the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa
and for the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa.
Strengthen their witness as they care for creation
and defend the ocean that connects and sustains their peoples.
Give wisdom to leaders making decisions about the future of the deep sea.
May the voices of Pacific peoples be heard and respected.
Protect fragile ecosystems, the creatures of the deep,
and communities whose culture, livelihood, and identity are bound to the moana.
Teach us to receive creation not as a possession to exhaust,
but as your gift entrusted to our care.
Keep our lamps burning with hope, courage, and faithful action, for our neighbors today and generations yet unborn.
Amen.
Mission Moment from Samoa

In Samoa and across the Pacific, the ocean is more than the water surrounding the islands. The “moana” connects families and communities, provides food and livelihood, carries memory and tradition, and shapes a people’s relationship with God’s creation. Through its partnership with the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa and of American Samoa, the Disciples and UCC accompany a church whose ministry takes place amid the life-giving sacredness of the Pacific and growing ecological pressures facing island communities.
Today, one concern is growing interest from other States and international corporations in extracting the ocean’s valuable resources. Proposals to mine the deep seabed for minerals have raised alarms throughout the Pacific about damage to little-understood ecosystems and about who should determine the future of the ocean. In its 2024 TUĀKOI ‘LEI Declaration, the Pacific Conference of Churches called the Pacific churches to reaffirm their “ongoing stand against deep sea mining” as a matter of justice, sovereignty, and faith.
That witness recently found expression in American Samoa. More than 600 delegates to the General Assembly of the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa (CCCAS), an ecumenical body in the U.S. territory, adopted a resolution opposing “any seabed mining activities within or near the territorial waters” around their islands. Their action comes as the U.S. government advances plans for seabed mining leases off American Samoa. Meeting under the theme “God Takes Residence in Creation,” they called the ocean a sacred trust and committed themselves to “safeguarding the ocean [as] an act of faithfulness to God and love for future generations.”
Jesus’ parable of the ten bridesmaids reminds us that faithfulness requires watchfulness before the critical moment arrives. The Pacific churches ask the wider church to keep our lamps burning: to listen before decisions become irreversible, to respect the voices and sovereignty of Pacific peoples, and to recognize that caring for the ocean means caring for our neighbors and for generations still to come.
