Contributing to the Integral Well-Being of People
Emergency Care at Theological Education Events
During this academic year, the Theological Community of Mexico (CTdeM, its Spanish acronym), held several national and international events with current theological and social themes. This type of event involves a considerable number of people who require first aid care in the event of an emergency. For this reason, CTdeM established a healthcare position specifically for the care of participants. Having this position within the program of events has prompted us to update our emergency kits with equipment for the taking of vital signs, first aid items, and medications.
Throughout the events of this year, the healthcare position has assisted in the following manner:
The VI Symposium of Christian Worship on Liturgy and Love with the theme:
“Child and Youth Paradigm to Resist the Empire from a Latin American Perspective.” This Symposium was held on July 25-27, 2019, with the participation of 50 persons from different countries. Participants included children, adolescents, and young people, who also participated in various training workshops.
The second event was held during the first days of October in coordination with the TEPALI Network (Network of Women Theologians, Pastors, Activists, and Christian Leaders). The meeting involved women from different Latin American countries under the theme: “The Relevance of Feminine Theologians and the Advancement of Religious Fundamentalisms.” The goal of this event was to analyze the socio-political and religious realities experienced in each of the Latin American countries. As a result of the reflections, common themes emerged that challenge churches and ecumenical and social movements.
During these events, urgent medical attention was given to 15 persons who presented different diagnoses. Diagnosis for several cases: diarrhea (dehydration), vomiting, dizziness, hypertension, injuries (accidents in the kitchen), sprains, fevers, headaches, and eye irritations. Each case was taken care of in a personalized manner, with quality and warmth. All affected persons made a full recovery from their illness or injury.
In addition to these interventions and over the last two and a half years, other medical emergencies have been addressed for all those attending the CTdeM. Throughout this position of healthcare worker, we have been able to provide the taking and controlling vital systems, simple injections of medicine, healing of injuries, and referrals to local health care clinics.
Living through these experiences have taught us the importance of being prepared for medical emergencies. Our participants can manage their daily lives more peacefully to concentrate on their academic studies; thus, the service provided by the CTdeM is more holistic. The institution connects with its Christian principles for the total care of the student’s well-being.
It is gratifying to be able to serve people and collaborate with the training and education processes of theologians, pastors, and ecclesial and community leaders. I appreciate the trust provided by the CTdeM and the financial support of the local churches through Global Ministries. Without Global Ministries’ support, it would not be possible to walk towards a more realistic approach to wholistic theological education for all the members of the institution.

Atención de emergencias en eventos de Educación Teológica.
Durante este año académico la Comunidad Teológica de México (CTdeM) celebró varios eventos nacionales e internacionales con temas teológicos y sociales de actualidad. En este tipo de eventos participan grupos considerables de personas, las cuales requieren de atención en primeros auxilios en caso de producirse una emergencia. Por esta razón, la CTdeM estableció un puesto de enfermería para la atención durante el desarrollo de estos eventos. Esto ha implicado actualizar el botiquín para urgencias con equipos de signos vitales, materiales de curación y medicamentos.
Entre los eventos más importantes de este año, que contaron con atención de enfermería, están:
El VI Simposio de Culto Cristiano sobre Liturgia y Ternura bajo el tema: “Paradigma infantil y juvenil para resistir al imperio desde una perspectiva latinoamericana”. Este Simposio se celebró del 25 al 27 de julio con la participación de cincuenta personas de distintos países. Entre los participantes había niños, niñas, adolescentes y jóvenes, quienes formaron parte de los distintos talleres de capacitación.
El segundo evento fue desarrollado durante los primeros días del mes de octubre en coordinación con la Red TEPALI (Red de teólogas, pastoras, activistas y lideres cristianas). En el encuentro participaron mujeres de distintos países de América Latina bajo el tema: “La pertinencia de las teologías feministas ante el avance de los fundamentalismos religiosos”. El propósito de este evento fue analizar las realidades socio – políticas y religiosas que se viven en cada uno de los países latinoamericanos. Como resultado de las reflexiones, surgieron temas comunes que desafían a las iglesias y movimientos ecuménicos y sociales.
Durante estos eventos se brindó atención de urgencia a quince personas que presentaron diferentes diagnósticos. Las principales enfermedades atendidas fueron: diarrea (deshidratación), vomito, mareos, hipertensión, heridas (por accidente en la cocina), esquince, fiebre, cefalea e irritación ocular. Cada uno de los casos fue atendido de manera personalizada, con calidad y calidez. Todas las personas afectadas evolucionaron satisfactoriamente hasta alcanzar su completa recuperación.
Adicional a estas atenciones, a lo largo de estos dos años y medio se han atendido otras emergencias presentadas por estudiantes de los cursos regulares que brinda la CTdeM. Entre los distintos servicios de enfermería que se han brindado están: toma y control de signos vitales, inyectables, curaciones y referencias para atención en una unidad de salud.
La experiencia de estos años nos enseñó que estar preparados ante las emergencias es sumamente importante. Las personas participan con más tranquilidad de sus distintas actividades académicas, y el servicio que presta la CTdeM es más integral. La institución se conecta con sus principios cristianos en cuanto existe una preocupación por el bienestar de sus estudiantes.
Es gratificante poder servir a las personas y colaborar con los procesos de formación y educación de teólogos, teólogas, pastores, pastoras y liderazgo eclesial y comunitario. Agradezco la confianza brinda por la CTdeM y el aporte de las iglesias a través de los Ministerios Globales, sin lo cual no fuese posible caminar hacia una Educación Teológica más sensible a las necesidades de salud de sus protagonistas.
