Council of Protestant Churches of Nicaragua (CEPAD) June 2008 Report

The rainy season that officially started on May 21st brought tropical storm Alma to the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. Houses, city streets, and other infrastructure were damaged, including two bridges in Managua because of the constant and heavy rains.

On June 3rd the National Assembly passed the Refugee Protection Bill, submitted four years ago by the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) under the auspices of CEPAD. After much lobbying, the bill was finally presented to the Assembly which passed it by consensus.

A special ceremony was held by the National Assembly on June 24th to commemorate World Refugee Day. Marion Hoffmann, UNHCR representative in Mexico, attended the ceremony.

The 2004-2008 Impact Evaluation was finished on June 27th. We thank Mr. Harrison, our volunteer from Australia, who conducted surveys and meetings for the Evaluation, and wrote the final report. This is available in Spanish on request. Mr. Harrison finished his internship with CEPAD on June 30th.

On June 17th CEPAD’s General Assembly approved the 2009-2013 Strategic Plan. CEPAD has selected 43 new communities from six zones in which our staff will work during the next five years.

The Peace Commissions of Nueva Guinea celebrated their 25th anniversary by holding an Encounter on June 11 and 12. They reflected on the Bible, shared stories about their current work, and met with local authorities.

In June 2008, we greeted several visitors including representatives from UNHCR Mexico, delegations from Davidson College and Tacoma Presbyterian Church in the United States, and the Harrisons from Australia.
