Death of Lynn Keyes, former missionary in Philippines

Word has been received of the passing of Lynn Keyes, 86, on Monday, March 17, 2008. Lynn and his wife, Lillian, served as educators in the Philippines from 1951 – 1967.

Mr. Keyes grew up near Rush, New York, and was a 1941 graduate of Cornell University. In 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Keyes were sent to the Philippines where he did administrative work training and overseeing Filipino pastors. His counsel also was an aid to rural people around the village of Kabugao in the mountains of Apayao district of the Mountain Province. He was director of the local mission school which trained local people in better livestock and garden produce, sanitation and education.

Mr. and Mrs. Keyes resigned their position in 1967 so that Mr. Keyes could accept a position with the Extension Service working with the Sioux Indians on the Pine Ridge Reservation.  In 2000, Lynn and Lillian published a book of excepts from letters they had written home to their family while serving in the Philippines (a copy of which is in the Division of Overseas archive file, as well as the Disciples of Christ Historical Society).

Mr. Keyes is survived by his wife of 60 years and an adopted daughter, Deborah Grace.  He was preceded in death by an adopted son, Deane Allen.  Cards of condolence and sympathy can be sent to Lillian Keyes at 2005 Harlan Street, Apt #1, Falls City, NE  68355.
