Global Ministries is saddened to learn of the death of Eleanore Anne Hire

August 4, 1924 – March 5, 2015

Eleanore_Hire_web.jpgEleanore Anne Hire was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 4, 1924 to Charles and Willa Hire. Eleanore had an older sister, Helen Margaret Hire, who predeceased her in December of 2009.

Eleanore attended Murray University where she studied music, education, and math from 1942-1943. She received a Bachelor Degree in Music from Indiana University in 1945 and also received her Master’s in Music from Indiana University in 1946.  She studied at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque 1948-1950.  She also attended Julliard School of Music 1951-1952.

All that knew Eleanore knew she had two passions in life besides her faith.  She loved music and travel.  She was a teacher as well as a concert pianist.  These talents led her to become a missionary and serve in Japan.  From there she was able to fully enjoy her other passion, world travel.

In 1959 Eleanore was appointed as mission personnel of the United Church Board of World Ministries (UCBWM), a predecessor mission body of what today is Global Ministries.  For her first assignment in Japan she was sent to Miyagi Gakuin in Sendai as a teacher of music where she served until 1965.  She then was assigned to Kwassui Gakuin in Nagasaki as a teacher of music.  In 1990 Eleanore completed her mission service and retired on March 31, after 31 years of service.

Upon her return to the United States, Eleanore retired to the Pilgrim Place community where she met many new friends and renewed others as she enjoyed her remaining years.
