Evangelical Church in the Rhineland sends prayer of solidarity on the occasion of US Independence Day
For a long time, the special relationship of Kirchengemeinschaft (“church partnership/communion) has existed between German Protestant churches and the United Church of Christ. In this relationship at the national as well as on regional levels and even on congregational level, churches pay attention to the well-being of each other, sharing in both difficult and happy times, sharing in good and bad news, and sharing the gospel. The two churches exchange spiritual experiences, staff encounters, and documents. The German churches take notice on July 4, 2026 of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, a reason to hold in prayer their American siblings.
The Evangelical Church in the Rhineland has sent this special prayer (in Engligh and in German)as a symbol of Kirchengemeinschaft: of solidarity, of spiritual togetherness:
Loving God,
We pray on this weekend of the American Independence Day for our brothers and sisters in faith in the United States, especially for our partners in the United Church of Christ.
In a time of social tensions and deep divisions, strengthen those who build bridges. Bring togetherness where division grows, openness where there is suspicion, and readiness for conversation where people have become strangers to each other.
May diversity be recognized as enrichment and protect the recognition of the worth of every person. Strengthen all those who are committed to tolerance, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence.
Give your church courage and steadfastness. Protect the church from allowing the Gospel to become subordinate to power, wealth, and ideology. Strengthen all who resist Christian nationalism and who bear witness to the fact that your love embraces every person—independent of their national origin, language, or personal history.
Bless the pastors of your church. Give them freedom and courage to proclaim your word, without fear of being put under pressure or of the expectations of the political spirit of the time. May the liberating message of Jesus Christ always be heard.
Bless the fellowship between our churches on both sides of the Atlantic. Deepen our trust, friendship, and mutual encouragement. May we learn from each other and together bear a shared witness to justice, peace, and hope.

Liebender Gott, wir bitten dich am Wochenende des Unabhängigkeitstages für unsere Glaubensgeschwister in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, besonders für unsere Partnerinnen und Partner in der United Church of Christ.
In einer Zeit gesellschaftlicher Spannungen und tiefer Gräben stärke die Menschen, die Brücken bauen. Schenke Zusammenhalt, wo Trennung wächst, Offenheit, wo Misstrauen herrscht, und die Bereitschaft zum Gespräch, wo Menschen einander fremd geworden sind.
Lass Vielfalt als Reichtum erkannt werden und bewahre die Achtung vor der Würde jedes Menschen. Stärke alle, die sich für Toleranz, Verständigung und ein friedliches Miteinander einsetzen.
Gib deiner Kirche Mut und Standhaftigkeit. Bewahre sie davor, das Evangelium den Interessen von Macht, Geld und Ideologie unterzuordnen. Stärke alle, die christlichem Nationalismus widersprechen und bezeugen, dass deine Liebe allen Menschen gilt – unabhängig von Herkunft, Sprache oder Lebensgeschichte.
Segne die Predigerinnen und Prediger deiner Kirche. Schenke ihnen Freiheit und Mut, dein Wort treu zu verkünden, ohne Furcht vor Druck oder Erwartungen des politischen Zeitgeistes. Lass die befreiende Botschaft Jesu Christi hörbar bleiben.
Segne die Gemeinschaft zwischen unseren Kirchen diesseits und jenseits des Atlantiks. Vertiefe Vertrauen, Freundschaft und gegenseitige Ermutigung. Lass uns voneinander lernen und gemeinsam Zeugnis geben für Gerechtigkeit, Frieden und Hoffnung.
Darum bitten wir durch Jesus Christus, unseren Bruder.
