David M. Stowe Fund for the Advancement of Mission Study and Research

The David M. Stowe Fund for the Advancement of Mission Study and Research was established as a Wider Church Ministries endowment in 1984 as a fitting tribute to an outstanding Christian minister and visionary who dedicated his life to furthering the work of Christian mission.  The Reverend David M. Stowe and his wife, Virginia Stowe, were missionaries in China from 1945 until 1950 where David taught theology at Tianjin and Beijing.   David later completed his doctoral studies at Pacific School of Religion in California and served as Chaplain at Carleton College in Minnesota.  While serving as Education Secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), he helped to form the United Church Board for World Ministries (UCBWM), the predecessor body of Wider Church Ministries United Church of Christ.  Reverend Stowe also served from 1963 to 1970 with the National Council of Churches and held a leading role in the World Council of Churches Commission on World Mission and Evangelism and its Theological Education Fund.

The David M. Stowe Fund for the Advancement of Mission Study and Research helps Christ’s church continue to preach the Good News in a changing world.  Distributions from the David M. Stowe Fund for the Advancement of Mission Study and Research are used for scholarships to students engaged in missions study in all parts of the world; for research grants to individuals and organizations to further understanding of mission history, current needs, and future trends; for the establishment of lectureships for outstanding scholars of Christian mission, enabling them to share their insights and vision with a worldwide audience; and for supporting the writing and publication of mission studies and research documents.

Contributions may be made to the principal of this Fund at any time. Gifts for the David M. Stowe Fund for the Advancement of Mission Study and Research should be directed to:
