Global Ministries involvement in Nepal

Nearly all of Global Ministries involvement in the country of Nepal to-date has been via the United Mission to Nepal (UMN). Global Ministries was one of the eight charter members of UMN in 1954.

In 1954, the name of the mission was “Disciples of Christ in India and United Christian Missionary Society.” UMN referred to it as UCMS, as through the 1960s there was a drive to try to link India up strongly with the new outreach into Nepal, and many missions held their membership through the names of their Indian branches.

This did not really work out, and in the end all the missions reverted to their recognized names in the home countries. The Board Meeting of 1969 records a change of name of the UCMS to “The Service Association of the Christian Church (Disciples).”  It was then known in UMN as “Christian Church (Disciples).”
