Global Ministries is saddened to learn of the death of Marvel Fagan

Marvel Jean Weaver Fagan

May 8, 1915 – April 13, 2019

Marvel Jean (Weaver) Fagan was born on May 8, 1915 in Opheim, MT where she grew up and attended high school. Marvel attended the College of Education at Montana State University in Havre, MT, where she received a certificate in teaching in 1934.

Marvel taught in Opheim, MT schools from 1934 until 1943 and for Fairfield, MT schools in 1947. On December 24, 1941 Marvel married Richard (Dick) Fagan. Marvel and Dick served in India from 1951 until 1954 with USAID.

In 1956 Marvel and Dick Fagan were commissioned as mission-coworkers by the United Church Board for World Ministries (UCBWM), a predecessor mission body of what is today Global Ministries, to serve in the Philippines. Dick and Marvel served in the Philippines for over 30 years. They began in Mindanao and then served in Cavite Province at Union Theological Seminary for the rest of their time. While serving in the Philippines Marvel was the supervisor of the teacher training department at Southern Christian College, Midsayap, Cotabato. She served the Rural Life Center setting up a library, assisting teachers with lesson plans, editing materials, and teaching English to international students at the seminary. Additionally, Marvel served as the treasurer of the Rural Life Center.

Marvel and Dick retired to Seattle, WA in the fall of 1986. In retirement, Marvel utilized her green thumb as an avid gardener. Dick preceded Marvel in death in July of 2002.  

Marvel and Dick had two children Sharron Jean Fagan, who preceded Marvel in death in March 2010, and Bob Fagan.
