Hong Kong Christian Council Letter to the US Government on THAAD Deployment in South Korea

Hong Kong Christian Council Letter to the US Government on THAAD Deployment in South Korea

March 17, 2017

The Honorable Rex Tillerson
Department of State
2201 C Street NW
Washington, DC 20520

Dear Mr. Secretary,

In view of your visit to South Korea on March 17-18, 2017, the Hong Kong Christian Council writes to express our deep concern for the peace and security of the Northeast Asia region.

We are strongly opposed to the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea. The deployment will only worsen an already tense and dangerous situation. Instead we urge you to restart dialogue among all parties affected and to seek peaceful means to solve the issues, rather than heightening the conflict.

The Hong Kong Christian Council is actively involved in supporting the peace-building efforts in Northeast Asia, particularly with our North Korean and South Korean partners. The Christian ecumenical movement is committed to building bridges of understanding and trust as the way forward to genuine peace and reconciliation on the Korean peninsula.

We hold you in our prayers for a successful visit.

Yours sincerely,

Rev. Po Kam-cheong

General Secretary
