ISNA Calls on Muslims and Christians in Nigeria to End Riots

(Washington, DC – January 20, 2010) The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) is appalled at the news of riots in Jos, Nigeria, that resulted in the death of hundreds of Muslims and Christians, and the burning of several homes belonging to members of the Christian community.  Religious friction and conflict have increased in recent years along with the deterioration of economic conditions in Nigeria

ISNA holds the law and order authorities in the region responsible for these tragic riots. The Nigerian government should take responsibility, bring the perpetrators of violence to justice, and work harder to improve social and economic conditions.

We also call on local and national leaders in both the Muslim and Christian communities to start a process of reconciliation and ensure that agitators in both communities are exposed and the perpetrators of the crimes are brought to justice.

Playing on religious emotions to create divisions and incite people to violence is contrary to the teachings of Islam and Christianity.  We particularly appeal to the wise leaders in the Muslim community to uphold the teachings of Islam which calls on its followers to respect religious diversity and human dignity. The correct way to uphold Islam is to show respect for human life and solidarity with the poor and the weak.

We at ISNA stand committed to promoting peace and harmony with other faiths and are willing to work with other organizations and individuals of all faiths to bring relief, healing, and comfort to the region.
