AMANESER 2025, Puerto Rico
AMANESER 2025 is a community-rooted, ecumenical network of grassroots organisations in Puerto Rico dedicated to fostering resilient and sustainable communities in the face of climate change and environmental injustice. Emerging from decades of local advocacy for workers’ rights and environmental health, AMANESER began formalizing its mission in 2016 and has since partnered with neighborhoods across the island to install small-scale, community-managed solar energy systems, rainwater-harvesting systems, and communication tools for emergency resilience. The organization emphasizes that sustainability is not simply a technical matter but a holistic one — integrating faith, community organizing, environmental justice, energy independence, and democratic planning. In the wake of devastating events such as Hurricanes Irma and María, AMANESER empowered communities like those in Jayuya, Yabucoa, Bayamón, and Humacao to lead their own strategic planning processes: they articulate their vision for a just, democratic and sustainable Puerto Rico, identify priority actions, and implement infrastructure such as solar panels, water filters, and refrigeration systems for medicine and food. AMANESER’s educational programmes train local leaders in technical installation, maintenance, collective governance, and community organising, thereby fostering local ownership rather than dependency. As Puerto Rico grapples with recurring disasters, an unstable electric grid, economic precarity, and the unfolding realities of climate change, AMANESER stands out as a faith-inspired engine of transformation—linking environmental reality with Christian service, and redefining the role of church-related networks in public life. Its vision of “prosperous, fair, democratic, sustainable, and happy” communities signals a bold intersection of ecumenical faith and social innovation.
AMANESER 2025
