NCC Leader Joins Religious Leaders to Urge Syrian Ambassador to End Violence

NCC meets with Syrian leadership

In a meeting yesterday [March 13, 2012], a group of diverse religious leaders, including Clare Chapman, NCC interim general secretary, met with Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations H.E. Bashar Ja’afari to call for an end to the violence in Syria.

The religious group included the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rainbow Push Coalition founder, Dr. Obery Hendricks, Jr, visiting scholar at Columbia University Department of Religion, and Dr. Kris F. Erskine, senior pastor at Bethany Baptist Church.

“As Christians we are committed to peacemaking and reconciliation and are gravely concerned about the rapidly increasing violence in Syria,” says Chapman. “We urge the Syrian government and all parties involved to take concrete steps toward a peaceful resolution of this conflict as we commit ourselves to Syria and our partners in prayer.”
