Sweden, Maine – Tjaard G.Hommes, 81, died September 26 at home after a fulfilling and fruitful life as a United Church of Christ minister and professor of theology. Born in the Netherlands, he came to Fryeburg, Maine in 1953 to serve as pastor of the First Congregational Church.  He continued with a teaching career at Harvard Divinity School, Silliman University in Dumaguete, the Philippines, the University of Notre Dame and the Christian University “Duta Wacana” in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, though always maintaining his home in the beloved Maine hills of Sweden, where he spent his final years with his wife of 57 years, Anne. His death, of natural causes, was peaceful. His wife and their four children, Norman, Mark, Vreni and Caryn took comfort in caring for him at the end of his rich life.  He will also be remembered with great fondness by his eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 2nd at 2pm at the First Congregational Church of Fryeburg.
