Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center (CMMLK), Cuba

Centro Memorial Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Cuba

The Centro Memorial Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (CMLK) is a Cuban, Christian-inspired, macro-ecumenical organization founded in 1987 in the Marianao district of Havana, emerging from the work of the Iglesia Bautista Ebenezer. Over the decades, it has grown into a dynamic center of popular education, theology, community development, and social justice action. Its mission is rooted in the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.—advocating for human dignity, anti-racism, participatory democracy, and the transformation of society through grassroots empowerment. Based in Havana with outreach across Cuba, CMLK develops educational programs, provides training for community leaders, and builds networks of popular educators; it helps local congregations, social movements, and civil society actors reflect theologically, organize locally, and act for change. Key to its work has been promoting gender equity, diversity, and anti-patriarchal awareness, producing resources, writing policy drafts, conducting workshops, and publishing materials. CMLK also engages in communication, public formation, and links to international solidarity networks, making it both locally rooted and globally connected. In recent years, the organization has taken on new challenges in the Cuban context: facilitating non-violent transformation, addressing ecological issues, strengthening community resilience, and supporting processes of memory and social inclusion. As Cuba navigates changes—economic, social, and institutional—the CMLK stands as a legacy institution that continues to adapt: forming new generations of educators, building partnerships, and advocating for a society where faith, justice, and participation intersect.

Centro Memorial Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (CMLK)
