United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI)

jamaica1.jpgThe United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) is, first and foremost, a diverse and ecumenical seminary to which Participating Churches send for training candidates whom they have selected with a view to ordination. Many students also come to study at the UTCWI from non-participating communions. It is supported and maintained by the Participating Churches all of which are indigenous. Some six (6) Denominations form the participating Communions that own and operate the College, namely:

  • Jamaica Baptist Union
  • United Church in Jamaica and The Cayman Islands
  • Diocese of Jamaica & The Cayman Islands
  • Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas
  • Moravian Church in Jamaica and East West Indies Province
  • Lutheran Church in Guyana

The UTCWI, as a Christian Institution, seeks to provide Theological Education in a student-centered environment that promotes spiritual, emotional, and social development, and prepares men and women for mission and service. At the UTCWI, a community of learning and worship is promoted. Men and women, lay and ordained, are prepared for ministry in the Caribbean church and beyond within the denominational traditions from which they come. Every endeavor is made to strike a balance between academic excellence and spiritual sustainability. It receives no government subsidy.

UTCWI offers eight degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Ministerial Studies, Bachelor of Arts in Theology, Licentiate in Theology, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Theology, Master of Philosophy in Theology, Doctor of Ministry, and Doctor of Philosophy in Theology. These are offered through the five departments of the school: Biblical Studies, Theological and Ethical, Historical Studies, Practical Theology/Pastoral Studies, and Religious and Philosophical Studies.

The United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) is a center of excellence for Caribbean Theological Education, debate, and dialogue. It provides prophetic and moral leadership to the people of the region and attracts the best minds for teaching, research, and outreach.
